7.1 rear surround placement opinion

I have searched the forums and only found tangential information on the topic I am researching. I apologize if my search query did not catch this question.

I currently have a 5.1 speaker setup. I am adding two rear surround channels for a 7.1 setup. My problem is, my sofa is placed against (directly against) the long wall in a 13"X 22.5" room. My side surrounds are mounted 90 degrees a tiny bit forward of the listening position.

My rear surround position must be compromised because my sofa is against the wall. Should I place the surrounds about 48" apart, near the ceiling pointing down, or towards the opposite wall? Would I be better off with only 5.1? If I only use 5.1, I can use the remaining amp channels to biamp from front l/r speakers so this isn't all a waste.

I would really like to hear from people who have a similar setup, but any input is appreciated.

For what's it worth, here's my thoughts.


EXISTING SURROUNDS
1. Determine the distance between the center and the surrounds. Let's call this measurement "X".

2. Re-position the surrounds so that there is "X" feet between surround left and surround right.

3. Re-position the surrounds to a height of 60 inches.



NEW SURROUND BACKS

As I see it there are three options for aiming the surround backs -

FORWARD

UP TOWARD CEILING

FACING EACH OTHER

Base your choice upon careful and repeated experimentation.


NOW, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT MOUNTING THE SURROUND BACKS.

1. Determine the distance between the center channel and the surround backs. Let's call this measurement "Y".

2. Determine if the surround backs are to be mounted on the rear wall or on stands.


REAR WALL MOUNTING
4. Seperate the surround backs by "Y".

5. Measure to a height of 60 inches.

6. Determine the best aiming method then mount.


SPEAKER STAND MOUNTING
7. Seperate the surround backs by "Y".

8. Determine the best aiming method then mount.
