7.1 speaker placement issue, pleas help!

Well, my girlfriend is giving me issues with the way the speakers are set up, she just cannot understand that placement is everything and to her a few inches makes no difference. well to get to the point, i currently have my left and right surrounds behind me mounted on the side wall above ear level, but apparently my girlfriend said that they are in the way of something she wants to do in that area so she wants to scoot them forward a "bit", but then they would be about a foot in front of me and from i hear that is a big no no as you would want the effect of the sound coming from behind you. Well do you think that the effect of surround sound could be lost with that setup? I have direct firing speakers in case you needed to know that.

anybody here have a similar set up? how do you think it would sound?

I once heard someone's HT system that had the rear surrounds placed on the floor at each side of a very large couch, on their backs and with their drivers facing upwards. I couldn't believe how good the system sounded with that set up!

You might want to try this idea instead...

hmm, i heard that as well. would they be placed vertically or horizontal? of far apart would they be? with that setup could you have the side rears in thr back corner or would you still need them to be in front of the center rears?

Just leave the speakers where they are and "place" the girlfriend "a few inches" outside the front door. Then lock the door - Problem solved!
