what would cause this

Every once in a while, more often that I would like, my sub "flutters". I dont know if flutter is the right word or not but it kinda make a continual pa pa pa pa pa sound when there is dialoge in a scene. No one else can here it but my ears are in a lot better tune with my theater than anyone else. Any ideas????
ps sub is a Vivid 10" 100watt and the receiver is probably 3-4 years old at the most(Pioneer)

Is it like a low 'lisp' kind of sound with the dialog?

You could have your sub set too high. I have heard similiar sounds when the bass tone control is turned up too high which over loads the woofer.
