How to test my Velo HGS18?

Greetings:

I have a spiffy almost new HGS18 I bought used from a pretty good source. I am interested in testing it just to be sure it's working properly after shipping. Is there an easy way I can do this? This is my first sub and I have Avia, VE, and DVE, and a RS SPL, but from my limited understanding, Avia seems more oriented toward calibration that a plain old test. Is there some simple procedure one could recommend to run the sub through it's paces and test that it's functioning properly, or probably OK? I do have the ability to create CD's and I know where to at least get some test tones (snapbug's) if that's any help.

Right now the sub is in my huge wide open unfinished basement and it's not putting off any jaw dropping pantsleg flapping bass on some DVD's I have tried. I hadn't expected too much but did expect a little more. I figured the space size might be a partial culprit for that.

I'm not looking for detailed tuning and setup, just a warm fuzzy feelng that the sub is OK, dosent' hav a messed up amp or driver, and will likely work properly once I can get it into it's new (smaller) space and properly tweak it.

Thanks,
Scott

Usually, you have to be very careful trying to deterimine max output with test tones, however, the Velo has limiting built in. The Velo limiting typically will not allow you to overdrive the sub.

If you put something bass heavy on and you measure over 100 db at point blank range there is probably nothing wrong with the sub. But to go beyond that, you will probably need test tones. Beyond that I can't be of much help. Someone like EdwardJM who is doing sub tests for magazines should be able to offer something more concrete. Speaking of which, if you are in a huge open basement you may be losing 5 db or perhaps more.

I love Velos and would be thrilled to have a DD18. On the other hand, there are subs that can just outgun the Velo 18s. Not that that is an option for you at this point. Did you audition it before you bought it? I guess not.

Keep your chin up, it is probably allright. You may also wish to call Velo. Kurt is usually very helpful.

So some test tones at the various freq's measured close to the sub out ought to indicate it's doing something right?

Nothing "big" around here to audition really. Just normal smaller B&M subs. My long term plan is to consider a 15" Tumult based dual PR DIY, but that's not an option right now, they are retooling. I don't want one of the first units off the new line. I figured the HGS18 surely would be enough woofage to do short term if not permanently.

I might give them a shot, thanks for the suggestion. I want to be sure and get my ducks in a row first so I can maximize my help and minimize anyones time to help me.

Thanks,
Scott
