how can i prevent my subwoofer volume from spiking?
Just got my svs pb10 and had a question...
my receiver is set to crossover at 80; when I do a frequency sweep on the subwoofer alone, the volume on the sub crescendos to 55mhz, then drops, then gets louder at 45mhz then drops again. is this normal? if not, how can I control this? thx

The point of doing a FR plot, IMO, is in anticipation of using an EQ to tame those peaks and dips. Most likely these are room modes caused by standing waves in your room.

I'm fairly certain that 45mHz and 55mHz are inaudible to the human ear so I wouldn't worry about it.  |

sorry, i meant hz, not mhz.  sounds like there's really not much I can do short of buying an equalizer |

If you have the ability to move the sub around, some room modes can be modified by sub relocation (2/3 along the longest wall...). This often means a less than pleasing/convenient location, but it's worth a shot. Do you have it corner loaded right now?

You are hearing the effects of your room.
Your best options are room treatments coupled with placement. EQ can further tweak things very flat.
EQ in a plain room is beneficial, but can't solve all problems, and can't work in the time domain.
I certainly don't discourage EQing, you just need to know what that it is a tool, and can't solve everything alone.
