hissing from *disconnected* speaker (on top of tv)

my buddy at work hit me up on this. i have no clue.

he has a jbl center speaker. when it sits on top of the speaker, it makes a slight noise. (i can't remember if he said hissing or buzzing, but it's making noise.) it makes this noise even if there are no speaker wires connected to it.

what's weird is if he moves it away from his tv (27" tube), the noise stops. so, it definitely has something to do with the tv.

question is...what is going on.

this is my dvd collection. there are many like it, but this is my own ...

CRT televisions use very high voltages to charge the screen and to operate the electron beam deflection coils (the coils of wire around the neck of the tube)--I'll bet stray electrical fields from these sources are getting into the speaker's voice coils and causing the cones/domes to move enough to produce some sound.

My B&W CC6 used to do this- slight hissing from the treble driver even if the speaker cable was removed from the speaker's terminal side (centre ontop of the TV). Moving the centre up by 6" solved it. I tried a Kef Q75c also ontop of the TV- no hissing. And a Kef 200- no hissing.

So basically worked out it's was the B&W centre's fault at not shielding out external RF noise.

Placing a steel sheet between the TV and B&W centre also stopped it.

No, it doesn't hurt anything. But it might bother the TV's picture near the top edge when the speaker is playing.
