First, here is my current audio system:
Yamaha RX-V2095 receiver
Boston VR975 main
Boston VR-MC center
Boston VR-MX surround
Boston PV1000 sub
Monster interconnects

The history:
Originally, I had only the VR975's and they were (are) just tremendous in 2-channel mode, with outstandingly powerful bass that can blow your hair back.

I recently added the center and surround. I ran it with the LFE split to the input of each VR975 powered sub and main set to small at the receiver. This was OK (even if only for the fact that I could now enjoy real surround decoding) but unfortunately I found that really low bass signals would get muddy and distorted very easily with some of the more demanding movie soundtracks. After a lot of tweaking and never being satisfied I thought maybe adding a dedicated sub and running the VR975's at large might solve the problem.

Enter the PV1000, which I had heard and read very good things about. I was at first a bit underwhelmed by this little beast but after using it for a couple months now I feel it does it's job well, sacrificing thunderous but perhaps a tad sloppy bass you might get with larger subs (in the under $1000 category anyway) for tighter, more accurate LFE. So, it seems like an acceptable addition and my system has definitely improved a notch with its introduction.

The bottom line though is I still just feel like I'm not getting the best bass this setup has to offer. I think the heart of the issue is how best to deal with the VR975's and their powered sub units.

Hooked up as I have it now (all LFE going to PV1000, main set to large, crossover done at the receiver) it sounds very good, accurately reproducing all LFE without distortion. However, it just doesn't have that 'knock my socks off' punch I had expected, based on how the VR975's subs perform in 2-channel mode. If I put my ear to each speaker, I can hear the PV1000 really cranking out the lows very accurately but the VR975's subs sound like they are doing almost nothing. These VR975's are awesome, I just can't figure out how best to utilize them.

Oh, also want to mention I have the RX-V2095 toggled to the 8-ohm setting.

So, help. =)
I'm fairly new to all of this so am asking all of you for any suggestions on how best to set this system up to maximize bass performance in DVD movies.
Like, here's one question I have:
What if I split the LFE 3 ways and set main back to small?
