Velodyne?

I figured that since I just bought a Velodyne sub, I should probably figure out how to pronounce it. Not knowing anyone who would know, though, I need to ask you guys. So it is:

1) Vee-low-dine

2) Vee-low-deen

3) Vee-luh-dine

4) Vee-luh-deen

5) Vell-o-dine

6) Vell-o-deen

7) Vell-uh-dine

8) Vell-uh-deen

(I don't care to remember proper notation, so in this case, "dine" rhymes with "dime", "vell" with "gell", and the "o" is a long O.)

As others have pointed out, #5 is correct. (Also, #7 works if you are in a hurry.) :>)

Your question reminds me of the story about two fellows driving through Alabama on their way to Georgia when they were about to pass through the city of Opelika. They had an argument about how the name should be pronounced: Oh-Pell-Ick-A or Opp-Eh-Like-A, etcetera. They stopped at a fast food joint at the edge of town and before placing their order, one of them asked the young miss behind the counter: "Can you tell us how to pronounce the name of this place?" "Sure," she responded: "Dairy Queen."

1 through 8 are all wrong. The correct pronunciation is (VELL). There are certain occasions where 5 might be used though....I used to run a VELL so I know.

Perhaps some history on the name might be interesting.

Dave Hall, founder of Velodyne, was a champion bike racer. Hence the prefix Velo (as in Velodrome). Dyne stands for power. Dave invents all kinds of stuff and was working on bike related inventions at the time (1982). The name just stuck when he created the first servo loudspeaker.

Quote:
The correct pronunciation is (VELL).
The owners of Velodyne speakers whom I know (including myself) :>) who use an affectionate nickname for them say "Velo" ("vell-oh" -- rhymes with "fellow"), not "VELL". Seems that Velo just rolls off the tongue more easily than VELL. But then I guess some people also say the harder-to-pronounce "Vee Dubb" instead of "Vee Dubyah" for the Americanized "VW" (Volkswagen).

Whatever you call them, the powerful bike racers (Velodynes) are great speakers. (Interesting how the official name came about.)
