Well, you could look at the review threads on this site.

Actually, I was over at David Boulet's place last night comparing the R1 Porco Rosso to my R2. The R1 is most definitly better than the R2. It probably looks about as good as it is going to get, and sounds quite good for a 2.0 audio track.

Suncoast has all 3 GHIBLI titles for $20 each, minus ten dollars for buying all 3, plus a free bonus disc with a preview of Otomo's upcoming Steamboy.

also, i see there's a new ghost in the shell dvd? is it remastered with better audio and/or video? or is it just some repackaged deal?

Ghost In The Shell S.E (2 discs)

Disc 1:

Digitally Remastered Anamorphic Widescreen picture
motion menus
English 6.1 DTS-ES, English DD-EX 5.1
Japanese 6.1 DTS-ES, Japanese DD-EX 5.1
Spanish, French, Italian, and German DD stereo
English subs

Disc 2:

Character dossiers
Creator biography
Director biography
Digital Works
Production Report
GiTS trailers
Previews, DVD catalog, web links

I haven't had time to watch the whole show, but it seems to be an improvement on the original release.

hey all, so any buzz on the latest ghibli releases in terms of quality, audio, etc? any issues i should be aware of? if not i'm gonna get them some time this week.

I've watched Porco Rosso. The transfer looks pretty good. Colors have good saturation. The film looks pretty good, considering its age. I have to admit, I kind of preferred the washed out color on the nth generation VHS fan-subbed copy I acquired. It had a more pastel look to it than this new DVD release; however, the DVD still looks pretty good.

I only listened to the English dub for a few minutes, but it seemed to be competently done; however, some of the dialogue changes seemed to be unnecessarily expository: as if audience members might be too stupid to figure things out, so why not tell them. Although a lot of the dialogue changes were probably made solely to ensure proper lip sync. Regardless, I don't need to be told that so and so married Gina of the Hotel Adriano . I was quite able to figure that out on my own just by watching the movie. There were dialogue changes that, to me, didn't even make sense. For example, Porco Rosso's closing comment
when he was finishing telling his story to Fio (his aeroplane mechanic/designer).

I also thought some of the dialogue deliveries sounded slightly stilted on the English dub. Keaton did a good job on Porco Rosso's voice, but he still doesn't come anywhere near the gravel-coated, world-weary vibe of the Japanese voice actor.

There was at least one change to the dialogue on the subtitle track. At one point, on my fan-subbed copy, Porco refers to Curtis as, IIRC, an American bastard. In the DVD version the profanity is absent. It is possible that the fan-subber added the profanity to "spice things up", but considering when the original comment was made, I doubt it.
IMO, they "cleaned" the dialogue. A minor nit, but still it is an annoying nit.

I also think Disney was kind of lazy with the subtitle timing. There were times where the dialogue of two characters was displayed, even though only one character was speaking at the time. Sometimes, doing that is unavoidable, but there were cases in Porco Rosso where I think they could have timed the subtitles for each individual character's dialogue.

I also think the DVD cover art is rather bland and does nothing to sell the movie. 1930s style seaplanes were a big part of this story and yet there was nothing to be seen on the cover. At least two of the planes depicted were actual existing designs or based on existing designs.

All in all, I would still buy the movie. I just think there was still room for improvement.

The suncoast deal sounds pretty good.

Did they put stickers on the cardboard slipcover?
I almost bought one of the Ghibli movies at Best Buy but they had a giant upc sticker on the back and a Best Buy price tag on the front.

I guess it comes from my nitpicky video game collector syndrome, but I hate it when I end up with a damaged slipcase to get the stickers off it.

Dave:

Yes, they do. I don't care, since my disks get ThinPak'd, but I've had other disks that have had their sleeves/cases wrecked by them.

the stickers come off very easily. they use that semi-gooey type of glue, so it doesn't stick at all. mine came off without a hitch...

Finished a bunch of stuff on wed evening - Shamanic Princess, Sorcerer Hunters, and Fighting Spirit #4.

Also got my ADV order, and watched almost all of Kaleido Star last nite (have 3 eps left, slept at 530 am ) This show comes as a B/B+ show, and is about a 16yr old girl who wants to join an elite troupe of acrobats who perform on the Kaleido Stage. Pretty addicting show.

Talking about addicting shows, Fighting Spirit #4 continues to be an excellent blend of boxing and humor. This series is also HIGHLY addicting, as unlike most shows, it gives a human aspect to hte main character's opponents and why they fight the way they do. A- series so far...

Woo:

So it was an early morning...or was it late?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting started on Lunar Legend Tsukihime this weekend. Hopefully, I'll have time to watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind sometime this next week.

John.
