Hey guys, anyone know anything about a DVD release of Robot Carnival? I tried searching this huge thread but I didn't see any release info.

Thanks.

I bought a copy on LD from Big Emma [no lie!] who claimed it was not out on DVD in region 1. I'm certain there is a region 2. It was licensed by Carl Macek's now-defunct Streamline Pictures and released by the now-defunct Lumivision, so there are problems. I think ADV bought out most of Streamline's rights but I don't know where that one went. Anything would be better than this LD, though, it's badly mastered and not even OAR!
I wasn't thrilled by the movie, though. If you didn't find my Capsule Review in this thread, go to the link in my signiature and hit "Reviews" down near the bottom, there aren't so may of them at the moment that it'll be hard to find.

Kain:

According to Anime News Network, there isn't an R1 DVD for Robot Carnival. The last news was from about three years ago. Unfortunately, since the show is about 18 years old, the chances of getting a release here are slim (but not impossible).

All:

I watched Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence this morning. Not quite the same as seeing it on the big screen, but fun nonetheless. I'm neither terribly impressed nor terribly put off by the caption-subs. I got used to them right away, and they didn't hinder my understanding of the movie.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but the new Appleseed movie opened Friday. As you can see here, however, the fools at Geneon didn't get any screens at all for it in most states. I won't be going to see it unless it goes into wider release, because I am not going to drive 18 hours each way to see it in Rob's neck of the woods or take a 24-hour train trip to see it in Chicago. I swear, the mentality of these people! If anyone in one of the showing areas does go to see it, I'd appreciate a review.

I'm not going to take a 4 hour trip to go see it. Orlando never gets anything, too many hicks

Geneon is being smart and distributing it to areas where it would make the most money. Instead of spending money to make tons of prints of the film, they'll just put out in the most profitable areas and focus on the DVD instead. I think it makes perfect sense.

Speaking of Appleseed, it made a $78,700 in 31 theaters with an average of $2,538 per screen this past weekend. The average is the same as a movie that comes out in 3,000 theaters and makes $7,614,000.

Since when is Philadelphia a bigger anime market than, say, Seattle or Toronto? Well, maybe with those per-screen figures they'll consider a wider release. Since I'm not going to buy the DVD it's the only way they'll get any money out of me. Mind you, if a DVD player enters the household at some point there's plenty of stuff I might rent, but I don't anticipate buying one.

Ha! This is like one of the first "real" anime movies I've ever seen to not get a lot of lovin' from the media.

That review is hilarious! Especially when he refers to the characters as "the big-eyed, Botox-mannequin characters". Hahaha!

Christopher:

I'm disappointed, too. I was looking forward to seeing it in the theater, since GITS 2 was the only anime movie I saw last year.

Metacritic has it scored at a 40%

Too bad. We'd have probably went to see this in Ann Arbor if they were showing it (we saw Tokyo Godfathers when it came out).

Gideon - "Probably. Screw them."

I finally got around to watching Samurai Champloo vol 01 last night. IMHO, it has some interesting character designs and style. I wasn't terribly impressed with the OP song, but I liked the ED song much more. I also really liked the opening 'this isn't historical, and we don't care' notice. I'm looking forward to seeing more in March.
