but on the other hand, every shopping mall has a Suncoast Video with a HUGE anime section, it's showing up on cable, etc.
But how many people are actually watching the anime on TV and buying the DVDs?

I mean, what have we come up with in this country lately? SAMURAI JACK is incredible. SPONGEBOB is cute but not nearly on the same level. SOUTH PARK has great writing but crappy animation. SIMPSONS has been unwatchable for several years now.
Samurai Jack is not that great, Spongebob is too much of a kids show for me to enjoy, South Park is hilarious, Simpsons is not as good as it used to be, but I still love it.

What have we come up with in this country lately? I only need two words to respond to that question. FAMILY GUY!!!

Fact is, if you want to see 2D animation... there are no more companies in the US putting it out. Korea and Japan are the only two countries producing it, and with more and more Japanese outsourcing, it is looking like Korea will become the center of the animation world in the next decade or so.

I'm not in a position to provide actual numbers, but from my own observations, the amount of shelf space devoted to anime in this one particular chain has increased over the last year or two. There is anime on Adult Swim and I understand an entire cable channel is being established, devoted solely to anime? I would have to assume that the market is slowly but steadily growing.

While we may agree or disagree on the merits of any particular show, the point remains, there is only a small handful of titles coming out of the US.

I wasn't aware of this but I find it fascinating. I wonder how much of the "Japanese" animation that I love actually comes from Korea. On second thought, maybe I'd rather not know.

BTW I liked what you said about being a "Gainax whore". Who are the pimps that put out LAIN and BOOGIEPOP? Can I be their whore too? And I would gladly be a whore for whoever is responsible for COWBOY BEBOP.

If you like Lain, Boogiepop, Haibane Renmei, Texhonolyze... you're an "ABe whore"

Cowboy Bebop was directed by Shinchiro Wantanabe, who also directed Macross Plus and recently also directed Samurai Champloo, which should be coming out on DVD in R1 in January. Great series, by the way

This has been a very mixed week for me.
My third [?] coousin John, whom I do not recall ever having actually met, was apparently wounded in Iraq. "That sucks," you're saying, "but third cousin?" Well, the fact of the matter is that he's my age and more closely related to me than a half-brother would be. My family isn't inbred, but due to certain historical accidents I have a very large pool of very close relatives on my mother's side and almost none on my father's. So, it's very probable that the two of us are basically interchangable. I'm still waiting on news about him.
On the other hand, I was just presented with what amounts to an entire Japanese Language Library, about a hundred pounds of dictionaries, grammars, &c., by an associate who acquired them about two decades ago as part of an attempt by a local firm, a major player in the semiconductor market, to give its employees a competitive edge. I'm having trouble finding shelf space for them.
I've got some nice new items for my coin collection very cheaply, but on the other hand I got diverted through the airport on the way home and had to pay $2 toll.
Why am I posting this in the Anime thread? Your guess is as good as mine.

Christopher, I hope John is OK. He's a true hero.

Have fun with that gigantic pile of Japanese books!

Kewl! Good luck wading through all that stuff, and if need be consider what you REALLY need out of that stuff and keeping on the shelves, instead of throwing it all on the shelves. That is Be selective. Just a bit o' advice from someone who had to change to thinpaks and is -again- running out of room for his dvds and manga.

And seriously, the crap going on in real life in the real world really stinks. Best wishes (anime and otherwise) for your third cousin, and hope that that he recovers completely both mentally and physically.

And BOO! HISS! to the tolls, but here in NY the tolls are $3.50 each way. Hopefully you are comforted by this little factoid, because I ain't.

Oh - I reread Shaman King 1-3 then read volume 4, and did some laundry. I also saw 1 ep of You're Under Arrest Mini Specials. Lots of fanservice, but with the YUA crew is always upto the task. Even Aoi-chan (hehe - those of you familiar with at least Ep 5 of the series should know).

Spoiler:
She is a HE, and does it so well that he creeps the women out.

Oh - I post here because... I can!

Christopher:

My cousin is also in Iraq, with the 81st Armored Brigade over at the Baghdad airport. I feel for ya, man. Enjoy the Japanese books .

Rob:

That would be me .

Woo:

I watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex vol. 2 last night. I've got one of the mislabeled SE sets, but I probably won't do anything about it if do offer an exchange. I mean, I don't look at the labels while I'm watching the disks . Anyway, this series is damn excellent. Hopefully, the third time (disk) will be the charm. I also finally listened to the the OST from disk 1. I didn't bother to check if I had a bad one, since I was too busy playing Civ3 at the time, but I don't any of the songs that I'm interested in were affected anyway.

John.

I'm all about FMA, but that's a whole lot of money to spend. Oh, my aching pocket book.

Hi there! Any of you animeheads seen Steamboy? He was here a minute ago. [looks around] Well I've just seen it [crowd murmurs] incredible visuals, beautifully animated, so-so story, set in an alternate Victorian London, and why not makes a nice change. Not Katsuhiro Otomo's best work, Akira (1988) is still king, and more Metropolis and Last Exile with a smidgen of Sky Captain in style and flavor. Well worth seeking out.
