It is based on an H-game you know, and those have limited fanbase here in the states. That being said I would bet most companies don't really want to license something they will have a hard time selling.
|
Lunar Legend Tsukihime is also based on a hentai game, and that was licensed.... Oh well, this is why we have fansubs in the first place

I was planning on picking up Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Comlpex volume 2 on Tuesday, but I keep hearing about some problem with the normal edition. Should I wait on this one?

James:
Yes, actually I just heard tonight that they were all recalled because they won't play.
Uhh....yeah, that could be a problem...
In other Tuesday News:
No anime for me this week....nothing of note for me....Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Super Size Me is top of my list this week...(SSM because at the end there is a big Detroit is #1 for fattest cities in the nation) Since I was watching this on the big screen in Ann Arbor, just outside Detroit and there were huge cheers to this...it was so amusing I just have to buy the movie, if only to laugh at that part again...lol..

Finished Big-O, and completely understand NOW why JohnAD said that you'll want to get the second series individually.
Also managed to finish Saber Marionette R, which is also voiced by Megumi Hayashibara as Lime (she also voices Lime in the TV series and OVAs. Besides, I needed practice spelling her name :b ) It gets a B- from me, and is quite dark. 90 mins in all, with good voicework and an interesting story... (Well, for me. I am quite easy to amuse.)
Also finished a lot of Sailor Moon S. Zoomed through Discs 2 through 5, and started on Disc 6. I will probably be done with these by wednesday or tuesday at the earliest. Mainly because Korean Chu'sok is here, where we honor our ancestors (Grandparents, Great Grandparents, etc ) with a big meal and genuflecting...

Michael:
If you're talking about NGE, I was watching the original disks. I'm not about to double dip on NGE. The more I watch NGE, the more I feel it is way overrated.
Christopher:
Dang...what's with all of the ADV bashing? You may not like recent anime, but clearly lots of people do, since they wouldn't continue buy the disks if they didn't like them. And while I'm all for AnimEigo, frankly I don't see them being around for much longer.
Stacey, James:
Ermmm...I had heard that the problem was just a lebeling mixup, where the SE disks got the DD label, and vice versa. Since I'm picking up the SE, it won't be an issue, but I can see why James would want to wait if he's just getting the normal edition.
Woo:
I had a slow anime day yesterday. I only watched disk 1 of Record of Lodoss War. My wife and I did get through The Empire Strikes Back, The Return of the Jedi, and part of the extras disk.

Heh - JohnAD: Sailor Moon S is a long series. 5~7 eps per disc. And what I hope is a very good ending. At least I am on the last disc. I do have Sailor Moon Super S, so if I really was demented I could watch that. Too many monster of the week eps, but I did want to watch one of the seminal series that got Americans into anime...
I probably won't get to Star Wars until this weekend. Sad, but I DO have the discs and they will be watched. Just a matter of when...

Hello everybody,
Part-time lurker here. I just watched FLCL this weekend, and my reaction was, holy crap! This show is so crazy and so outrageous, it make my previous favorite, Cowboy Bebop, look like The Care Bears or something. I read the previous comments in this thread about the series, and I would say that it DOES have a plot. What sets it apart is that the exposition, which normally would appear in the first chapter, instead is saved for the last chapter. We see events unfold, and one event leads to the next through cause-and-effect relationships, but Haruko's motivation and purpose are kept secret from us until the end. I'm listening to the soundtrack right now and can't wait to watch the series again. Also, I picked up disc 1 of Neon Genesis Evangelion for the very first time.
What other series can you fellows recommend to a FLCL fan who is itching for more? I understand there are many series in the "crazy" sub-genre, but few of them have as strong a plot and themes that are as rich as FLCL does.
Note to Rob Lutter re: your new sig: For months I thought that was the cast of Friends wearing their tuxes for the last episode. But I discovered Buffy a couple weeks ago (am on season 3 now) and realized, just today, holy crap, that's Cordelia!

Woo:
I know exactly what you mean . BTW, we watched the Ep. 3 featurette, and not to give too much away, but they really didn't show very much in the way of Ep. 3, and none of it was finished. Still, it was worth it, and November's only a month away .
Rob G:
You might want to check out Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, although it's not quite so...different as FLCL is.

Imagine watching this knowing at the time that there wasn't a second series.
Speaking of Big O, has anyone heard anything about a third series? I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend and she had mentioned hearing about one. Personally, I can't see it, since it seemed like 2 ended pretty definitivly, but I was wondering if others have heard something about that.

It's not ADV bashing. I'm just seriously worried about their business plan. A massive investment into a video on demand service which provides only dubbed anime; a concerted effort to license everything out there [their people say their plan is to take over the world, and they seem to be only half joking]; pushing out bolus after immense bolus material in an apparent attempt to saturate the market: it disturbs me. They're running through a great deal of money, and pushing a great deal of product, in order to set up anime as "the next big thing" in American entertainment. Now, I realise that Hollywood can use the competition, but the whole Pokemon-Yugioh-&c. thing can only last so long it seems to me. I don't think that anime will take over the mainstream U.S. entertainment market, and the trouble is that if it doesn't ADV, overextended as they seem to be, may collapse and bring the rest of the market down with them, so that for the next 20 years [assuming the entertainment-business world of 20 years from now looks anything like the world of today, which is not certain] American investors will look upon not only anime, but all foreign [and probably independent] films, as poison. Then only diehards like the AnimEigo people [remember that Adams and Woodhead were rich when they started the company, and even if the bottom falls out of the market the hobbyists remain, which is their target market] will touch anything but STAR WARS EPISODE XXXVIII: REGURGITATION OF THE WOOKIE.
Also I have problems with their quality control and responsiveness to fan concerns.

ChrisDAC:
I sorta agree with the general assessment that anime - though growing - will not take over Hollywood. It's a now slowly growing niche market, and though IMHO it has a bigger audience than ever before, it STILL is a niche market.
