I would think converting DVD collections to thinpaks would be way too much work for what little extra space you get from it.

I dunno. Getting 50% more space on my shelves is rather attractve...

Alanna, Jason:
I have to agree with Jason; getting 50% or more savings on space is totally worth it. Considering the size of my collection, I would have stacks of disks as tall as me sitting around, since I have more disks than shelving, and unfortunately don't have a lot of floor/wall space for extra shelving.
All:
I got a few disks watched today . This morning, I rewatched both disks of Golden Boy. This is a fun series, but definitely slanted towards male viewers . I also marathoned Galaxy Angel. It was light and fluffy, and mostly forgettable, but fun in its own way. 'B-', perfect for some mindless anime viewing.

Hey maybe I'm just slanted towards the whole imposing thing. I am just at 700 DVDs now and it is an impressive display. When I finally run out of wallroom maybe I'll change my tune but right now I love nifty box sets and other things that look nice on the shelf. And the thought of thinpaking these things at this point is a monumental headache to even think about much less seriously consider. lol I have about 120-130 video games too that take up shelf space also. I was buying them like crazy in previous years but this year only have picked up I think 3 or 4 and that's all.
I really liked Golden Boy, the first episode was hilarious... the rest were OK and the last one kinda fell off. It was OK and I'm sure really fantypes loved it but to me it seemed to like the punch of the rest. I did like how it brought everything together for a finale though.

INNOCENCE review:
If you don't mind films that incorporate a lot of philosophy, or you can at least tolerate it until you get to the action, you will likely be amazed by the film.
Those who like to be challenged by movie's will find the movie to be quite thought provoking, although, much like Eastern Philosophy, the film asks more questions than it does provide answers.
As for how it compares to the first film, I found it larger in scope, but with a more intimate relatinship with the characters. It is slightly less intelligible philosophically. The basic plot is much more faithful to classic film noir. And the anime is even better than the first film.
Anime and sci-fi fans would be wise to see the film in a theater, before it gets grimy and faded. Judging from the lackluster DVD of the first Ghost, as well as more recent Miyazaki anime releases, it will likely be Hi Def DVD before we see another faithful representation of the films excellent visuals. The audio mix is somewhat lacking, however, with very rarely used surrounds.

Alanna:
Well, I thought that at first, too. However, at this point, it's not that big of a deal. In fact, I just finished converting about 30 regular and snapper case DVDs to ThinPaks this weekend. If you get a good paper cutter (I use my wife's Fiskars paper cutter), you can do 30-40 in the space of an hour or so.
All:
I just watched a few disks today. I rewatched all of Eat Man '98, and both disks of Macross Plus. I'm going to try an get as much done by the end of the month as I can, since I pretty much stop watching anime in October, except for a few shows.

This could end up being a pretty large week for me. I am getting Star Wars but since I went ahead and signed up for a Best Buy credit card I may also get:
New Fist of the North Star
Chrono Crusade
Wolf's Rain volumes 1 and 2
Evangelion Platinum volume 2
I probably won't get all of those even though I would have 3 months to pay it off, besides the fact that JohnAD is sure to block the shipment of NFotNS at the very least .
Still not sure on CC either, though I read spoilers for it and think the way it ends could be pretty intriguing.

Man, this weekend was busy.
Got more stuff. I'll list the Anime DVDs. Let me list them out:
1. Saber Marionette R - this completes my collection of the Saber Marionette series...
2. Onegai Teacher #1 w/ box - this starts this series - I'll try to find the rest of it on DeepDiscountDVD.
3. Stellvia #1 Limited Edition - This is a 7/8 disc series and the tin has four double (2-disc) thinpaks in a tin with a sliding top. Got interested because of the Angela performace that I saw at Otakon (J-pop band being promoted by Geneon that did the OP and ED theme songs)..
4. The Big-O perfect collection - An interesting brick, for sure....
For Manga, I got GTO #19-20, Shaman King #4, Battle Angel Alita #5, King of Bandit Jing #7, Ai Yori Aoshi #5 and a few others I can't recall right now.
Non anime dvds include Eddie Murphy's RAW, Bloodsport, and Kickboxer. Also got the Returner as well.
Also, gave some anime DVDs away to a friend, so my count isn't up by much. It also helps that I gave up what I double dipped on. Those are now deleted from my online list.
Also got a Kill Switch Engage and a Bon Jovi CDs for $3 a piece.

Ack, Woo got ahead of me in GTO again
I picked up Saikano v.1 (The Last Little Love Song on this Planet) yesterday. Just like the anime, it's amazing...
Only DVD I need to get this week is Star Wars. Next anime DVD I have in my sights is volumes 2 and 3 of Gundam SEED, which are coming on the same day next month (best idea EVER by Bandai to release 2 volumes every other month).

Heh - Rob, YOU are ahead - I have yet to read 18-20.
That said, I went to Book-Off, a Japanese store that sells Used or previously owned and/or old tankoubons, dvds, and cds (they also have used American stuff too), and got :
Steam Detectives #1 for $7,
Banno Bunka Neko Musume Phase II Drama CD for $7,
Patlabot TV OST for $7,
Slayers NEXT Sound Library II for $15, and
Vandread Girl's Serenade Vocals for $10,
Volumess #10-18 of the Japanese comic Iron Wok Jan! for $1/volume.
JohnAD, at some point you should go to the book-off store - I know there has to be one around or somewhere on the west coast, seeing that there is a larger Japanese population on the west coast than here in NYC....

James:
Mwah hah hah .
Woo:
Stellvia will have eight disks. I'll have to look for the Book-Off store. BTW, you'll probably like Returner. Anne Suzuki, the main actress, played young Hatsue in Snow Falling on Cedars.
As for purchases this week, I'll probably only pick up Star Wars and Saiyuki vol. 5. I also decided to push back my CD Japan order until January, since there are a number of series ending this year that I need to finish up.
The last manga I bought was the Japanese version of Love Hina v. 3. I'm not too behind in my TP mangas, but I need to pick up new volumes that came out this month.

John, you always say that!
The 4 posts or so today not enough for you?
Has anybody seen BLUE SONNET? I've got some store credit with an LD dealer and this is one of the things I'm considering getting.
Went out to a local used bookstore today, having a coupon expiring at the week's end, and found 3 anime LDs to buy: Gall Force Earth Chapter One, and the two volumes of RG Veda -- volume 1 factory-sealed! I have these to watch and make sure they're clean. The former I have seen, and enjoyed. The latter is an early CLAMP production, and suffers by the fact that the American licensees know enough about Sanskrit to use "R" as a vowel [it's pronounced "Rig Veda", which is also the name of the villain in Explorer Woman Ray, licensed by the same American firm... go figure] but not enough to revert the Sino-Japanese forms of the Indian gods' names back to the original. So Taishakuten, Tentei, Ashura, Karura, &c. instead of Brahma, Indra, Garuda, Asura, and so forth. Also, being an adaptation of a much longer manga, it undoubtedly suffers by compression into an hour and a half, as [I understand] does the similar Tale of Genji. Oh well, I | |
