Unfortunately no, no connection to Chrono Trigger, etc. I think it has something to do with nuns with guns...? Am I thinking of the right one?

I know Stacey is looking to collect it. It looked pretty decent.

Matheson- "There are probably some who'll say that by doing this, we are interfering with their culture."

Gideon - "Probably. Screw them."

Yup, takes place in NYC back in the 20's. I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes. It wasn't like, the greatest thing I'd ever seen but I was definitly resigned to buying it after seeing the first few.
It's got the nun that's friends with the "enemy" aspect going...very Buffy/Angel now that I think of it.
It bordered on cheesy but had definite potential...and the prospect of nuns with guns is pure genius.

Hmm...

Well, I did finish Inu Yasha Season 1 this weekend. Too bad Koga didn't show up yet, nor did Totosai, but all in all, it was a fun romp. A solid B series, I'll be collecting this in season box sets, since the episode count is so much better...

Horror?

Don't forget Vampire Princes Miyu OVA and TV series.

Now where should one classify a show like Baoh? I mean it does deal with genetics, weird paranormal powers, and lots of gore. Or Battle Angel Alita OVAs?

To all - well, if you guys can stand the dub, try to watch Rurouni Kenshin on Cartoon Network. They use the same voice cast throughout the series, and I believe they will only show two seasons - 1 and 2. This is a good show, as me and JohnAD can attest. Once you are done with this, you can try watching Samurai X Trust and Betrayal.

John: I shouldn't watch things when I'm dead tired. Thanks for the explanations, especially on Ryo-ohki, that just makes sense. Saw the last ep of the OVA last night and it made me think of one other question. Why is it that Ryoko sometimes has what appears to be a cat tail in some eps and in others she doesn't at all? It disappears and reappears at will it seems. hehe.

I read somewhere that some new Tenchi OVAs are being done in Japan, with one supposedly out this month over there. Wonder if these are any good? I like the series, except for Tenchi himself, he seems so clueless and has this big round head... I dunno.

Alanna:

Yes, the Tenchi Muyo! OVA 3 is coming out in Japan right now. FUNimation has the license in R1, since Pioneer/Geneon didn't want to have anything more to do with the series. That's also why FUNi got Tenchi Muyo GXP. I think Rob's seen what's out, so hopefully he'll chime in (if he can). As for Ryoko, yeah, I've noticed that, too, but I'm of the opinion that she hides it when she's in her battle costume (see eps. 5-6) or when she's trying to appear 'normal' (lots of examples in Tenchi Universe).

Woo:

I've got the OVA scheduled. I haven't picked up the TV series, since I heard it wasn't very good. And since it's Tokyopop, I'm a little leary. If I'm mistaken, let me know, and I'll add it back on to my list.

James:

One of the reasons the Japanese title for the series is spelled 'Chrno Crusade' is that the makers didn't want people to think that it was related to the Chrono Cross, etc. games.

John.

Thanks for the info on CC. Sounds like it may fall into a bit of the monster-of-the-week format? I'm also thinking it's somewhat on the light side. I'll have to look into it, but I may be able to take a pass. Does it compare to any other series?

My DVD Collection - very outdated

Tenchi OVA3 kinda started off boring with a half-recap episode... but the rest of the eps released have been quite solid. It's going to be a 6-episode series, expect Funi to spread it over 2 discs.

Alanna: those topics have been the subject of interminable arguments on the Ryouko Forever Fan Club mailing list. Consensus is that, in regards to the "tail", it's just a part of her clothing [a careful observer will notice a correlation betweeen its appearance and her outfit], and that since in the OVA her clothing seems to be an extension of herself -- presence or absence, and configuraton, seem to be wholly dependent upon her will, witness the numerous "quick change" scenes -- it is no surprise it responds to her moods. We see enough of her backside in nude scenes to be sure there's no tail there. :b

John: Well, if good horror isn't an extended riff on social problems, e.g. child abuse, sexual repression, or [in the case of my previous example] the condition of women in Enlightenment Europe, I don't know what it is.

EDIT: Gee, look, the extra spaces are gone! I had to add the ones I wanted back in!

Christopher:

I agree, although I think the 'hubris' theme is wayyyy over done, and IMHO smacks of anti-intellectualism. Still, Frankenstein is a classic, and one of my favorites. If you're interested in a film-crit book or horror, there is a book called Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film by Carol J. Clover that I recommend. It's a little too Freudian in places, but is a fun read.

JohnAD:

The Vampire Princess Miyu TV series is more "monster of the week" type shows, with a huge plot twist at the end that is quite shocking. In terms of art and story, the OVAs are better, but the tv series ain't that bad. I didn't care for Tokyopop's treat ment of the first disc, as it was a series of eps with one OP/ED and poorly placed chapter stops. I think Later discs did improve. If you can get it cheap (*I got it at a rightstuff sale with the "friendship charm and OST*) you can check it out. Otherwise, don't bother...

Also, I was trying *albeit lamely* to add two cents to the "horror" discussion, and NOT trying to dictate to you on what to watch...

Anyhoo, If I am lucky, I may watch something tonite or not. Gotta get to the gym as my pants are getting tight (yes, I must lose weight).

To ALL:
If you haven't watched it, try watching Rurouni Kenshin TV series. it's worth your time.

Woo:

No worries . If I didn't want peoples' opinions, I wouldn't have asked . Anyway, I've got a rough-draft-ish version of my viewing schedule at home, which is just waiting for my wife to get her October work schedule finallized. I probably won't be able to get most of what was suggested for this year, since I'm already starting to dial down the anime and dial up the horror/sci-fi purchase count. However, I am going to make a concerted effort to find Pet Shop of Horrors, since I've had my eye on that for at least two years.

As for losing weight, I'm doing the same thing . I've got an exercise bike at home, which I ride for 30 min before work four days a week. Since it's at home, it makes it much more likely to be used, and I can watch TV while riding. I rewatched a number of my R2 Ayumi Hamasaki/Do As Infinity/HAL disks the last couple of weeks, and this morning I started on the Alien III extras disk from the Alien Quadrilogy set.
