In addition, as much as I like my DVDs, movies in the theater will always be better than on TV.
|
No way! I would much rather watch movies at home than at the theater. While I do like the whole "experience" of going out to see a movie, the quality results are often disappointing, with spotty prints, poor sound systems that are never calibrated not to mention crowds of people being people - which means annoying. I have even tried a THX certified theater which has several screens that are supposed to be along a certain set of standards, but the bass was so over juiced that it was nauseating. I guess I just like everything to look and sound the best it can be, which is something I have not seen in a theater yet. Maybe someday?

Heh - I agree with Alanna - ever since getting a good sound system, I find absolutely no reason to frequent a theater at all. People being People ruins most movie experiences for me.
Hmm not much to report for me, this weekend, except that I re-watched (!) (Yes, it happens - this time mainly because I've been listening to the OP/ED that I felt I had to marathon it) Angelic Layer. Damn good series that rates a A-/B+ for me. Really catchy OP/ED, and a great story to boot - albeit it's seven discs.
Also read and re-read Iron Wok Jan 1-9, a cooking manga that is being SLOWLY released by Comics One. Also read a third of Berserk 3, the manga, being published by Dark Horse. Great stuff.
Finally, last night, I got to finish disc 1 of RahXephon. Very different and interesting. IMHO, more interesting/intriguing so far than EVA was, tho' that series ending really really pissed me off. And Yes, RahXephon is another seven disc series....
I also bought some stuff at suncoast, and ended up with Armitage III Polymatrix, which was a dub only release with Japanese subtitles for 14.99. So I now have TWO dub only titles in my collection which I have yet to view...
Dangaioh and Armitage III Polymatrix.

The only time I bother going to theaters now days is when there is a movie that I absolutely cannot wait to see. The last one that warranted me going to the theater was Spider-Man 2, and since it was showing at a place that recently got rennovated with all stadium seating and DTS, I wanted to see how it compared to home. Obviously, my HT kicked its ass in all aspects but screen size.
On a note related to the topic, I have finally downloaded the latest Japanese Mad Capsule Markets album (CiSTm KOnFLiqT...). I must say that I like any album that starts off with a 12 second track that has a beep, a tone that changes pitch and becomes the sound of a PS1 starting up, and the sound of an Apple Macintosh starting up. I guess I'm just a tech nerd like that.
Anyhoo, I highly recommed this album you like metal, punk, techno, or even jpop (GASP! Tony likes something J-Popish)!
Now if only some U.S. company would license this album for distribution here. Palm Pictures, I'm looking in your direction.

I got out to the theatre 3 or 4 times a week (always the midnight or 1AM showing, there's usually no disturbances)

Eric:
I prefer to watch disks all the way through. Even though the movie does fit in the main body of the series, the series is episodic enough that I don't find it problematic to watch it after finishing up the main series.
Woo:
Armitage III: Polymatrix is actually worth watching.
Alanna, Woo:
Well, if I had a bigger screen, I might be more inclined to agree with you. However, I think that home theater is part of the problem with going to the movies. Before VHS became really big, few people talked during the movies. Now, everyone's got a VCR and a DVD player, and people think they're at home, where they can chat as much as they want to during a movie, rather than being out in public.
All:
I finished up rewatching Cowboy Bebop yesterday with volumes five and six. It's such a great show; the whole last disk is just excellent. I also watched Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, which really fits in nicely, and volume two of Wolf's Rain. My wife watched WR with me, which is a rare thing, since she doesn't like a lot of the shows I watch. She does like WR, it seems.

So I've been hearing great things about "Wings of Honneamise" but have avoided it since the Region 1 DVD is supposedly so subpar.
I've since read that the Japanese R2 DVD is actually Region 0. Is this still the case (my Region-Free player is currently broken)? If so, does anyone have a link I can order it from? I searched on Amazon's Japan site but the only two links that came up were for the VHS editions.

Of course, the English language voice track is what POLYMATRIX was released in Japan with, unlike that poor Dangaioh. It's basically recut from the English dub of the OVA series, with the substitution of Kiefer Sutherland for the original "Ross Sylibus" voice actor. Elisabeth Berkeley is credited as Armitage, but the voice sounds the same as that on the original dub; since Pioneer was in the middle of a dispute with the actors' union at the time, the VA credits are wildly inaccurate, and I don't have an easy way of checking. The dub VA credits for Tenchi Muyo OVA go through I think about 3 incarnations, with different names given for the same people, sometimes credited on a character-by-character basis and sometimes just lumped together generically as "English Voice Talent".
When watching KOR, I screened the OVA discs in the gap between the two TV boxes since they don't have a specific place in the story progression, and the movie at the end where it belongs.

Our X1 projector/surround setup is very large, but a real theater is still better, and likely will remain so.
Perhaps there are less annoying people for us, as we tend to stick to indie and small production movies these days at the historic theaters. Minus the occasional big budget movie.
Matheson- "There are probably some who'll say that by doing this, we are interfering with their culture."
Gideon - "Probably. Screw them."

Well, I haven't pulled out the original dub, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was Berkeley, if just that her voice isn't that distinctive, unlike Kiefer.
As for the movie thing, I still like going out to the theaters, even tho I also have a projector and sound system in my basement. There is still something of the movie experience and getting out of the house that is attractive.
I also go to the second run theater nearby to catch up on what I missed first run, since time isn't always on my side. (Recently, I've gone to see Dodgeball and Harry Potter 3 there.)

Wow, we're slow today. I only watched one disk this evening: Saiyuki vol. 2. So far, it's been good, but not great. There are 10 more disks to go, so it's too early to say at this point.

I was on vacation last week but managed to pick up a couple of anime discs. I got Last Exile volume 5 and Ghost in the Shell: SAC volume 1. Wasn't really planning on getting GITS but I have heard good things and the price was right, so....
I also received a Best buy coupon for 10% off up to 3 dvds. Still a bit tight so I took my time making the decision. I was all set to pick up Wolf's Rain but then the local BB finally got a box of the RahXephon movie. Ended up going with the cheaper release. Will still get WR eventually.
I noticed over at animeondvd that they are listing Twelve Kingdoms as being a 10 disc set. Anyone heard anything more specific about this? I might pick up the latest volume tomorrow - assuming BB actually gets it. JohnAD, don't go using your evil powers to mess up the deliveries, ok?
