I picked up Azumanga Daioh v. 3 (w/ pin) and Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play v.1 (nice to finally be getting this, and with nice coverart too!)

Popped in Fushigi Yuugi.... the video/audio is the same exact thing as the boxsets, the only difference is a newer (and IMHO, nicer-looking) menu system and the Geneon logo when you put the disc in. Since this is the same video, hard subs are still present for both songs and during the presentation.

I love the coverart though.... it's also in a clear keepcase with more art inside (with continuing artwork onto the insert, which also holds another graphic inside and some stats on a few of the characters on the back). All in all, it makes me glad that I didn't buy the boxset (my best friend's, whose I have borrowed quite a few times, is falling apart).

Is the amount of compression on the FY discs the same? That is, can you check to see if they are single or dual layer discs, etc?

I was just curious, because what little of Stacey's FY discs I've seen showed overcompression artifacts on the projector.

It looks exactly the same... I'm sure they just used the existing DVD master/compression when making the disc. It's dual-layered, just as the boxset version was.

I had a light DVD Day (TM). I picked up Azumanga Daioh vol. 3, and RahXephon The Motion Picture: Pluralitas Concentio. I watched RahXephon TMP, and it was quite a good show, although I think it would probably be best to have seen the series first. The narrative seems to jump about a bit, at it'll probably leave someone who hasn't seen the series scratching their heads.

You just said that so you could convince me to buy the rest of the series.

Tony, the condensed movie versions of anime are never even 30% as good as the series. Speaking firsthand about Evangelion and Escaflowne here. I imagine Rahxephon is the same way, having watched the series. No way to squeeze that into a movie version.

Dave, Tony:

I would have to disagree. Having seen the NGE and the Escaflowne movies myself, you can have mediocre (NGE) or good (Escaflowne) results. I'm not even sure if comparing them is meaningful. Obviously, you can get more into a 26-episode series than a 2-hour movie. IMHO, you just have to treat them as separate ways of telling the story.

More like an alternate telling of the story. Other than the characters vaguely resembling their TV counterparts, there isn't much matchup between the two. I like them both, but I can't see the movie being a replacement of the TV series.

The point of Death was a bit different. More like to get the fans of the TV series back into the loop for the main event. It wasn't really designed for the non-fan comming in cold. More like, it would confuse more than help.
