Alanna: Can't really judge the new Therion, since I'm only on my second runthough of it. I think I like the "Sirius B" disc better, but I still like "Secret Of The Runes" better. That thing is a masterpiece.

Tony: Alanna pretty much answered your question. My definition of "real metal" is the stuff that continues to derive from the good (non-hair metal) groups from the 80s. Guys like Edguy, Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Superior, Conception, etc. I prefer clean vocals, but well used, I can deal with cookie. For example, I just picked up a CD by a band called Orphaned Land, an Israli death metal band which uses a lot of middle eastern influences.

The problem I have with a lot of the "current" bands is that there isn't a whole lot of talent on display. Just lots of loud, distorted guitars. The singing isn't terribly good either.

I don't think it is all worthless, tho. I do like Linkin Park and Disturbed, as limited as they are. They are good at what they do at least.

Now to return to the proper Anime discussion again. Sorry to sidetrack this thread.

Jason

Last metal post from me. Alanna, check your PM because I want to continue discussing this subject with you.

Jason: You'd consider Slayer and Megadeth to be real metal then, right?

Sure, that's true. But have you ever heard of Killswitch Engage? Now there is a great hardcore/metalcore band with tons of talent. Shadows Fall is also really good.

So yeah...um, I have no anime updates to talk about!

Eric:

I think you meant 'functionality' .

All:

Since we're getting back to talking about anime here, I've got a new poll: What are your favorite on-disk and off-disk anime extras? On-disk extras are like commentaries, character drawings, etc (Note: trailers are not considered extras for this). Off-disk extras are plushies, figures, boxes, etc.

My favorite on-disk extras recently have been music videos that have been included with Ai Yori Aoshi, Please Teacher, and Berserk. I don't buy very many boxes, so I don't get a lot of off-disk extras, but the lenticulars (I think that's what they're called) that come with TeXhnolyze have been pretty neat.

I rarely watch DVD extras. The odd time I may watch a "making -of" kind of thing, but other than that, I don't watch them. I find director commentaries to be mind numbingly boring, and things like storyboards, artwork, etc I don't really care about.

Off-disk extra's however, I love them! Figures, boxes, etc, etc... give me more! The only thing I don't like about them is I'm not always able/willing to pay more for them.

As far as on-disk extras, I still like the Berserk dub outtakes the best. I guess if you don't watch the dub they wouldn't be nearly as funny. They are just hilarious.

I'm not much one for art galleries, etc. I would wish for more director commentaries on the f'ed up and thoughtful shows, but, honestly, I find japanese spec. features frustrating. I read so much faster than the subtitles that I end up running the disc at 3x FF and reading the subtitles as they wizz by. I'd almost rather just have a translation of the meat of it as a little booklet or something.

Off-disc extras: the beautiful 12*24inch full-colour spreads from my Pioneer Anime LDs come to mind. Full of character designs, information... and some very stupid jokes . One I really want is the book from the GunBuster OKAERINASAI box set [I want the set too, I was just mentioning the extra with it] which is really the definitive artbook for the series. The trading cards from the Tenchi TV sets do little for me. AnimEigo's pamphlet liner notes for KOR TV were spiffy too. Also I have a collection of registation cards, including a big 12*12 job from a defective MS Gundam: Stardust Memory disc.

On-disc extras: I'm not really enamoured of VA interviews or making-of shorts. The still-frame collections on my Tenchi disks are nice, although most of the contents are duplicates of stuff in the liner notes. I do like the AnimEigo opening & closing credit sequences presented without text... this is one up from unsubtitled, and very nice.
EDIT: the interview with Masamune Shirow in the Ghost in the shell is hilarious, because to hide from the PTA he shows up as a crudely animated character.

By the way, is that Berserk series the Kenpu Denki: Berserk of 1998, released in Japan by VAP?

Christopher:

That would be the one.

Offtopic but sort of ontopic:

Anybody see the trailer for Sky Captain and the Day After Tomorrow? Did it make anyone else think of a certain other popular Geneon anime right now?

On-Disc Extra: Making-of documentaries

Off-Disc Extra: Good liner notes. Like the ones in Rahxephon. I haven't gotten a box or plushie or anything because it ends being like $10 more, and I don't think it's worth it.

I just watched it, and have no clue what anime you are talking about. Chances are that I haven't seen that anime, so just tell me what one it is!
