You know, I enjoy the presence of undercurrents and contemplative themes in entertainment, since entertainment which is any good [e.g. Shakespeare] is about relating to the human condition; but it doesn't have to be overt, and most overt philosophising is really just a blind over a shallow show. Although I did enjoy, at the end of The Ultimate Teacher, a bit where one of the characters starts on with the "but what's it all about, anyway?" routine, and another replies, "Yeah, right! Like any of us cares about that!" and they all end up laughing.

Not sure. Will check my boxsets, and see if I can find that...
UPDATE: Well, I still haven't found what that was - perhaps it's the mini specials. I do have all of You're Under Arrest.
At Kinokuniya, I ended up getting Do As Infinity's Gate of Heaven Tokyo LIVE, since they had no Do The Best in stock. Also got Rurouni Kenshin #5, so I am current with that series. I'll probably order it from cdjapan or something.

I thought it qualified as "engaginly mysterious." Really tho, the direction and characterization were so good, I read a little online explanation and I was satisfied with the whole thing.

Good news from Viz for those of us who have been holding out on Inu Yasha -- the first season set is coming September 7, with a retail price of $99.99!

For reference, this "File 2 1/2" shows up as a LaserDisc issued as BELL-783, while the numbering sequence for the OVA was BELL-694 to 697, and the TV series was BELL-996 to 1001 and 1067 to 1073. All this proves is that it was issued out of sequence as a special: for instance, the Tenchi Muyo! OVA runs PILA-1133 to 1138 and 1184 to 1190, while the Mihoshi Special released about the time of ep. 7 [1184] was numbered 1242 and the Soundfile disc 1241. I don't know what it is, if it's an animated short, or one of those seiyuu concert videos, but I would very much like to have some grounds to form an opinion so that if it is ever offerd to me I can choose whether to buy it or not. That's not too unlikely: the number of LD, and specifically anime LD, collectors is bound to shrink over time. More for me!

Got a question. As someone who HATED X: The Movie, would I enjoy watching the X: The Series? I'm asking because I REALLY like the packaging on the series(yeah I'm a box/slipcase whore....)

Hey All,
Haven't been on in quite a while.
I have never seen X:The Movie but I have the whole X:TV on DVD and I love it. I have heard that the series is much better because you get better character development and it follows the manga relatively close. This I know because I am reading the manga currently. That is also pretty good if you're looking to pick it up Also rightstuf has the whole X collection with box for 99 dollars on weekly special, pretty good.
I am currently watching Full Metal Panic and I have found it enjoyable up to episode 9. What did you all think of the series? I guess this is directed at John mostly hehe. Is this centered on the romance between the lead characters, or is it about Mithril and the Whispered in general?
I ordered Blue Gender complete box from rightstuf with the funi special. Good price, only 64 dollars shipped.

Michael:
I know I'm in the minority, but I liked Full Metal Panic. The people who had problems with the series had them with the later episodes, when the tone gets a little more serious. Personally, I think both parts add to the show. I've got FMP coming up soon on my Anime Challenge 2K4 rewatch list, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
Woo:
Let me know how Gate of Heaven is. Amazingly, my order from AsianDB has already shipped. I will be recieving Ju-on and A Tale of Two Sisters.
All:
I watched two more of my new disks last night. First, I watched Azumanga Daioh vol. 2. THe New Years' Dreams episode was very funny. I also watched Please Teacher vol. 1. I was just expecting to see a light comedy show, but I was really impressed because it was deeper than that. I really enjoyed it, and can't wait to get the rest of the series. Looks like I picked some good ones .
John.

I know I thought that what I saw of Full Metal Panic could well be a good series. My exposure, though, was limited.

Count me as one of the people who really enjoyed Full Metal Panic. And I didn't have any problems at all with the change in tone.

I've blown through quite a bit of anime yesterday. I knew I was off from work tonight after doing a couple of double shifts so I was just beat and needed an escape to chill out. Azumanga Diaoh vol 2 was up first (well after I finished the last two eps on vol 1). I really think the second ep was the strongest of the bunch, and I didn't get the New Years Dream episode at all. It wasn't even funny or amusing, just bizarre.
Then its Utena! time. I blazed through the first three DVDs in the Apocalypse set and I have to say that this series just keeps getting better and better. Its like an excellent book that you just want to keep turning the pages and moving forward. Still one ep left on the ninth disc, Revelations. I started watching it but was just too bleary eyed to continue. Will definitely finish this up today though. As long as the ending doesn't fizzle out this is going in my top three along with Chobits & Fruba.
That's about it... I think I mentioned earlier that I preordered the Devil Lady collection and Here is Greenwood. Just can't resist the cheep stuff. That's all, until we are blessed with more bricks and other cheapie releases.
