See, that's what I mean: even here there are at least 2 specialized anime shops within the 100 mile radius, which have some selection of titles for rent. For sure I don't mean Blockbuster! Now in port cities &c. I expect there are more of these shops, and larger; I know this is so in Houston. Really, cultivating a relationship with a local dealer is of the essence in Home Theatre, at least as I see it.

Heh - the problem starts when you run out of stuff to rent, Chris. That is, the usually very limited selection of shows.

You also have to remember that those who finish anime quickly (I've been known to finish 13 ep series during one work night ) will run through the limited selection pretty quickly. The fact is that anime is still a "niche market".

Besides, I never liked to pay to rent when buying ends up cheaper anyhow for me.

Woo:

I agree. While I rarely do so on a work night, I can get 16-20 eps watched on a weekend day without any problem. Of course, that assumes that you can even find the episodes or series that you want, especially new ones. Also, since I'm a collector, I already have an anime library that rivals or surpasses just about every store in the area.

I started rewatching Ai Yori Aoshi last night. Damn, the first disk is just amazing. I can't wait for Enishi to get here .

I'm still going to have to claim that there's a difference between collection and accumulation. I should know; I am an amateur numismatist, and two years ago I was engaged in inventorying the worldly goods of an elderly prelate who had died and left everything to my parish priest. The man had hoarded everything imaginable, from Ming vases and Roman bronze coins to the U.S. Presidents medallions of the Franklin Mint [he still had the little envelope with "Here is you commemorative medallion of Gerald Ford", and the item still in it...]. If you don't like to have something, or if you're not going to use it more than once and can get it another way -- as I said, this is definitely a valid consideration in anime circles -- why buy? I know that I am building up one of the larger collections of anime LDs in the Greater Southwest, but there are things which I see available for purchase, at a good price, and which I do not buy as not having sufficient interest in them. Of course, watching 8 hours of anime at a go strikes me as a little tiring, so what do I know?

Christopher:

For the most part, I would agree with you. You won't see any Dragonball Z or Pokemon in my collection, for instance, since I have no desire to ever purchase them. On the other hand, except for new series that I haven't had the chance to see more than once, every anime title in my collection has been watched more than once, and will be watched again in the future. Getting the opinions of other posters on this site, or going to sites like Anime on DVD can be nearly as effective a filter as renting, and it doesn't take away money from purchasing.

As for watching 8 hours of anime at a time, it is a struggle, but sacrifices have to be made .

Chris - You do have a valid point about being a packrat and the packrat mentality one adopts as a "collector" of anything. Anime isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination. That said, it's really my choice to spend my hard earned funds on this type of entertainment, and doing so has rewarded me with a good collection and hours of fun. Not to mention supporting the niche market for a larger variety of titles to come out.

If you can borrow from friends with the hobby to preview titles, more power to you. However, I don't condone bootlegs - and have no time for other methods of obtaining anime. I don't have the luxury (i.e friends in this hobby), so I go to review sites and this site (with all of you wonderful folks) to assist me in deciding what to get.

Now I am not gonna say that Anime beats live action, TV shows or others. But given a choice, I'd watch the anime first .

Alanna: I will send your game out this weekend or Friday evening. Haven't got DW4 yet.

Woo:

I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm also in a similar situation. None of my friends is as into anime as I am, so I can't borrow from them. A couple of people at work are fans, but their collections are appreciably smaller than mine. If I have the chance to see something beforehand, I'll do it (like Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, coming in 9 days ), but for the most part I have to purchase disks to see new anime. Considering how much enjoyment I've gotten out of watching anime, I don't mind spending the money.

John.

You rank Season 4 last? I thought that one was great. But I agree three was the best. Mmm Eliza.....

Oops off-topic. After my applications are finished and if I have funds left (after a bachelor party for a friend this Saturday), I think I'll get GTO Volume 2 manga and finish Love Hina (owning, not watching), and get that Ghost in the Shell.

Keep up the good work with the reviews folks. Got Netflix finally.

Off topic...

Yes, Faith's appearance in Season 4 was great, but her episode on Angel (in a crossover from that season) was hand over hand amazing. Besides Hush and the introduction of Spike/Tara to the main cast... the Initiative, Riley, and Adam were really annoying characters and situations that didn't feel like they fit into the show real well and didn't advance the overall plot. Ugh, Adam was the worst villan ever.

Now Glorificus and the Mayor, THOSE were good villans
