If you can't find it, I'll just order it online. Works for me....
Heh - Unlike you, I ended up sleeping at 3am or so. Why? watched 12-3 eps of City Hunter Season 2, after watching 40 mins of Enter The Dragon 30th anniv edition. Got two more discs left, then it's onto season 3 (only 13 eps) and 4.

Woo:
I can't remember the last time I was able to get away with the small amounts of sleep that you do. BTW, how is the 2-disk version of Enter the Dragon?

Oh evil sith lord, it is simply MIND OVER MATTER - and lots of caffeine through coffee/soda.
Enter The Dragon: Colors are MUCH improved from the prior 25th anniversary version, otherwise, all else seems the same except for the extra documentary or 2. They are brighter, and more spot on in terms of tone. Older print was washed out as compared to the new one. Oh and the old WB logo (red/white) instead of the new one also helps...

Thanks for the info! I might have to double dip this one. Too bad I had to give up caffeine, otherwise I probably would be watching more disks.

There really isn't much excuse to release a non-anamorphic disc these days anyways.
|
As someone else said, US companies are often dependant on their supplier from Japan for what they get as far as source material goes. If all they can get is non-anamorphic 4:3, there isn't much they can do about it.
That being said, Vandread is still worth it, and even non-anamophic, still looks great.

It's amazing how much U.S. release anime is not made from the "best available elements". Now, AnimEigo used to use the Japanese audio & video master tapes, and now they have taken to doing their own video transfers to get full quality for DVD [and even HD transfers], but a lot of packagers do not seem to take the trouble. The Streamline Nadia is a great example -- the hiss on the "original credit sequences" at the end of the LD sounds like they were transferred from somebody's well-used vinyl!

Christopher:
Animeigo are probably dependant on doing so. Their most recent show (You're Under Arrest) is from 1994, and most of them are from the '80s. While most people don't expect them to look like this year's most recent OVA, they have to compete with newer disks, and they can't afford to sell a large number of disks with poor PQ to justify remastering and repackaging (think ADV's Robotech).
Outside of legal and contractual prohibitions, there's the fact that the ROI is probably not high enough for other companies unless the series is very popular; ADV's Genesis Climber Mospeada and Southern Cross come to mind. These were most likely a direct result of ADV's Robotech boxed sets selling very well, plus the overwhelming response Animeigo got on Macross.

Comments about ADV bring this to mind...
I've got a Zenith DVB318 upconverting DVD player in house now to replace my dead Panny CP72. I'm not convinced the performance de-interlacing anime is as good as the CP72, but it has this feature called "autoplay".
Now, I'm not a big fan of automatically kicking off discs, but it skips the FBI Warnings, trailers, etc. All of it.
But most importantly?
You know what I'm talking about.
No more
WHAT IS ANIME?!

Matheson- "There are probably some who'll say that by doing this, we are interfering with their culture."
Gideon - "Probably. Screw them."
-Crusade, Visitors from Down the Street
