Alanna:
Manga Anime Cartoon is a known bootleg company. The Pirate Anime FAQ has lots of good information to help you avoid these in the future. Also, and unfortunately, many online stores sell boots and legitimate items, which means you have to be extra careful when ordering online from a new store that you haven't dealt with before.
Lorenzo, Christopher:
I'll second Christopher about Mazinger Z. If it does get licensed, I would really expect it will be ADV, since they have the funds to take on a series like Mazinger Z that probably wouldn't sell as well as some of the newer series coming out.
All:
I kicked off May's leg of the HTF Anime Challenge 2K4 with disks 1 and 2 of Genesis Climber Mospeada. So far, it's maintaining its rewatchability.

My friend lent me his Initial D DVD from Tokyopop and told me to check out the Dubbed version. What has this world come to!!! This kind of Dubbing should be banned dude. Like you know, cool! This has got to be one of the worst dubs I have seen. This ranks up there with Green Legend Ran!!

Woo: Utena Rose 1 & 2 shipped today so I should have it in my hands by Saturday if all goes well Today my BF brought home FFXI for the PC. I didn't realize it needed 6 gigs to run! Oh geez... hopefully can get online with it tomorrow after work.
JohnAD: Thanks for the link to the FAQ. I avoid boots like the plague because the quality is usually extremely horrendous. And I don't want to think I'm buying a DVD and end up with some really iffy looking VCDs. Argh.
Watched Elf Princess Rane this morning... it was amusing and fairly interesting. I was disappointed though that there was a "preview" for the 3rd episode but there seems to be NO 3rd episode. Wonder what happened there? It was a cute show with alot of potential. Dragon Half was another fun one that only has two eps...

Aside from the Japanese sense of humour [in the Anime Encyclopedia there is mention of a parody show couched as "two fake episodes and a fake trailer for a nonexistent third episode" and another which claims to be a sequel, but isn't, and has the subtitle "Somehow, this feels like the First Episode..."], there were a number of shows particularly in the late 90s which were made on spec and didn't sell, so that only the first couple of episodes exist. An example, I think, is Idiot Menace Photon, and there's another, Princess Marmalade or something, which I once saw for sale cheap but refrained from buying [because I don't like starting something I can't finish].

Romar:
That's well known among the fans. Anime on DVD had a long-running thread in their forums when the first disk came out. Unfortunately, Tokyopop doesn't seem to take the general run of anime fans too seriously. They obviously feel that people are going to snap up whatever they put out, regardless of creative editing. Their track record is less than stellar (problems getting Saint Tail out, removing the eyecatches on early disks of GTO, the aforementioned Initial D), and they have a long way to go before I'm going to buy more DVDs from them.
