THANK GOD! someone who agrees with me about Gunbuster. I personally would like to see it remastered in HiVision, of course, with the scripts for the twenty unfilmed episodes included as some kind of liner notes, but since the only HD video medium at the moment is D-VHS I guess it's not too likely. Until then, my Japanese LDs are definitely the gem of my collection, bizarre interstitial advertisments and all.

agreed, agreed. GAINAX have never been far from the brink of insolvency, but their first two products justified it all...

I'm going to have to agree with Rob about the commentaries on the new NGE disks, and dub commentaries in general. The only 'creation' they did was to translate the Japanese scripts into English. VA commentaries are ok, and the Cowboy Bebop movie was a great example of having both the original and the dub VAs, even though IMHO they didn't give enough time to the Japanese VAs. But when it comes to the actual creative part of the process, they really should be going to Gainax and getting them to comment on the creation of the story.
I did manage to get through Excel Saga vols. 4-5 last night. I don't think that much ES warped my mind too much, although one of my cats started to look like Menchi after a while, and I had the sudden urge to label him as 'emergency food supply' .

I am going to be sorely tempted to get those new Evangelion discs. No mention of a box though. I had already planned on starting Wolf's Rain but two more series may be more than I should commit to.
Tony-B: You an Anthrax fan? They just had a cd/dvd live release. Been listening to the cd - sounds pretty good, though it is weird to hear the older songs with the current singer.

Gunbuster is AWESOME. Any one of you who hasn't seen it is missing out on a GAINAX classic.
*ahem* well, no new news on the anime front. As usual, I am deeply meshed into ff xi after work.

James,
I got that Anthrax set last week, the concert is excellent, haven't listened to the CD yet.
I have seen both Anthrax and Joey Belladonna in the past year, both put on excellent sets with Joey doing a set of the old 'thrax classics. Got to hang out with him after the show, cool guy.
Anyway. I watched Tokyo Godfathers the other day and thought it was very good, I wanted to ask about a preview that was on the disk. Steamboy, looked really cool but I haven't heard of it before. Is there any release info on this title?

Couldn't find Azumanga Daioh (wrong date, D'oh), and I couldn't find the CE of Master and Commander.

James and Chris: I have heard of Anthrax, however I haven't heard many songs by them. But I do like what I have heard. Do you guys have any songs you'd suggest me to download?

Let's see:
Old school Anthrax:
I am the Law
Caught in a Mosh
Among the Living
Middle School:
Room for One More
Got the Time
Keep it in the Family
Only
New School:
Random Acts of Senseless Violence
Safe Home
What Doesn't Die
Best albums are Among the Living, Persistence of Time, Sound of White Noise.
The new one, We've Come For You All, is a return to form after the disappointing Stomp 442. I haven't heard Volume 8, they had distributor issues, I think it was recently reissued, so I need to pick that up.
These guyus belong in that first major wave of 80's Metal with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and second tier acts like Testament and Exodus.
IMHO of course!
Tony, which version of Archetype did you get? I got the one with the Aussie tour disk, watched a bit of it and was slightly disappointed, I was expecting live footage, it seems to mostly be backstage stuff...

Tony:
The songs off of The Sound of White Noise are pretty good.
Dome:
I'll be picking up Azumanga Daioh vol. 1 on Tuesday, too.

Chris, I got the one with the 30 minute long documentary on the making of Archetype. I haven't watched the whole DVD yet, but what I have seen is pretty damn interesting. The CD kicks way too much ass, by the way.
By the way, if anyone here likes absolutely devastating metal mixed in with techno, then get Archetype. Let me just say if you think Linkin Park is heavy metal, then you'll be absolutely crushed by this album! | |
