WGA Strike effects on TV on DVD.

With the lack of good scripted shows coming upon us this New Year, I think that the studios should take this opportunity to release previously unreleased shows or continue with shows that haven't had a release in a while.

What effects do you think the WGA Strike will have on TV on DVD in the beginning of 2008?

Re: WGA Strike effects on TV on DVD.

I think they should release more shows, as there won't be a better oppurtunity to do so than there is right now. Two things are contributing to this oppurtunity. The Strike, of course, which has halted production on most "Scripted" TV Shows. (Two other Unions may be joining them this spring) Also since 2008 is an Election Year, the airwaves are already becoming saturated with Political Advertising, with the worst yet to come. (That's "Attack Ads" for those of you in Rio Linda!) If I were in the Home Video Business I'd be looking for a way to aggressively market my product, using these two factors to my advantage.

DVD Inventory: TV Show Episodes: 7437. Movies: 400. Serial Chapters: 413.

I would like to see them release more. I do know that I been watching my TV on DVD sets more already... and it seems like it is only going to get worse.

But hey... maybe I will finally get my huge pile of unwatched dvds watched!

I don't know about that Mark... This thread is talking about the effects of TV on DVD... Will more be released because of it? stuff like that. The thread you point to talks about shortened seasons of TV Shows as they aired. Since this section is for TV Shows on DVD I don't see where this is the wrong forum at all.

CBS has gone into overdrive this season releasing their TV DVDs in the coming months. March through June promises to keep my eyeballs filled. They must sense that America isn't quite ready to just watch old CSI reruns.

It's the PERFECT opportunity for studios to release more product, especially continuing seasons of shows they have seemingly abandoned (Dharma & Greg, anyone??). People will be looking for something to watch.

My thoughts exactly. And I suspect we might have the writers' strike to thank for (suddenly out of the blue) more releases for abandoned shows like Barney Miller and Cheers that had been left for dead.

Whaaaa...they still make Network TV shows? TV on DVD baby...thats the only way to go. I can watch my old favorites anytime, uncut, no pop-ups, and in many cases better picture. If i want to try a new show i just NetFlix it and see if its worthy of my time.

I think I agree with Pete, Mark. The thread you copied over was more about the writers' strike and its effect on TV. This deals more with the strike's effect on TV on DVD releases. Unfortunately, we may be looking at shortened versions of current seasons that have already aired (or will air) showing up on sets until it's finally resolved one way or the other.

But, I do agree with other posters in that it has given me the opportunity to be able to watch TV on DVD most every night since nothing is on that interests me, at least until ``Lost'' returns on Jan. 31 and ``Jericho'' either this month or early next.

Real name: Dan Hart, Big Time TV Fan.

I also have not enough time to watch all of these DVDS:

Re: WGA Strike effects on TV on DVD.

I agree that it'd be nice to see more 'old' shows get a release, it's not like they had time to plan for it. It takes months and months to get a release together for a show and the strike could have been averted or it could have ended in a week or it could end tomorrow so they can't really plan a DVD release around something like that.

Along a similar line, will we see any half-season releases? Normally splitting the season up like that sucks, but with the strike there will be delays, and many shows intentionally wrote in mini-finales so that this season almost plays more like two half-seasons. For example, Heroes told more or less a complete story in its 11 broadcast episodes and even grouped them under one "volume," so I wouldn't feel bad about just buying Volume 2 by itself.
