Owners of Hazel Season 1 check out the discs, rot?

Hi

Today I took out the box of season 1 of Hazel which I bought when it was first released to watch the Christmas episode. When I took out one disc I noticed the back of the disc and it was all stained with a faint blotch resembling a water damage stain. I checked the other discs in the 4 disc set. 2 discs have these same stains. Is this the dvd rot that people mention? I have over 4 hundred dvd's and this is the first time I noticed these stains. Maybe everyone who has this set from the time of it's dvd release should check their dvd's to see if this is an issue with this pressing.

Does anyone know if a dvd/cd cleaning solution would work on the disc or should I just get the set replaced?

THANKS!!!!

I got the same stains on my all my Hazel discs, too. I checked my Facts of Life 1st season set (also by Sony), and 2 of the discs also have the same type of stains.

I don't know what it is. You're right that it looks like water stains. Its not cloudy or a milky stain and does not have a swirl-like appearance like some of the other reports. Time will tell-how worse this will get.

BTW, the packaging for these sets is not marked Scanavo.

Guys, I understand how disconcerting this can be. I've had several sets (mostly with the Scanavo casing) beset with the cloudiness issue myself. But here's the thing: all the discs still play. And although I don't like the thought of my dvds getting cloudy or my cases getting oily (and it does happen on rare occasions, no matter what anyone says), the bottom line is that they all still play. Until the discs stop playing I don't really see what there is to be upset about. They can get as cloudy as they want as long as it doesn't affect their ability to play. If that starts happening, then we have a major problem.

Gary "my Hazel S-1 discs are all beginning to show signs of smudging/cloudiness too (and no, the casing isn't Scanavo but it does have a very slight oily feel to it) - yet they all play fine" O.

If only we'd get a Season 2, I'd settle for cloudy discs!

Thanks for the replies! I actually contacted SPHE begore posting here yesterday and they e-mailed me saying they would exchange the discs - they sent me fedex paperwork and want me to take the package to fedex and I will get the replacement in 3-5 weeks.

I am amazed that it others are seeing the same problem and so far mainly on HAZEL except the poster that had same problem on Silver Spoons. I have season one of the Partridge family and it seems okay so far. Does anyone know where Sony's product is made? I have gone through more of my discs even as far back as the 1st dvd I bought and it is perfectly fine!!!!

Re: Owners of Hazel Season 1 check out the discs, rot?

Oh, great. I'd hoped this malady was limited only to the cited Paramount sets. I'd even checked a few of my Sony sets a couple of weeks ago, when this situation first popped up. But, I didn't check them all. My "Hazel" set does seem to have those initial stages of cloudy stains. I buffed them out with a cloth rather easily. I also found the same on my "I Dream of Jeannie" s-2 set, and my "Bewitched" s-3 set.

Really, really don't like to discover this is becoming a more widespread situation. I tend to think the discs are okay as long as we get to them quickly enough. But, if the "Have Gun, Will Travel" s-3 sets are indicative, this staining can very conceivably get out of hand and possibly lead to playback issues. I'm not necessarily panicked, but I do wish to take preventive measures, just in case.

Is this a disc problem or is it due to the case it comes in? 3 of the Hazel discs have a blot of cloud on them but I also have another disc that is quite cloudy and it still plays perfectly. Also, what's to say the same thing doesn't happen to the replacement discs?

mine fogged up, too. I wiped them down and put them in paper envelopes. does any do research on DVDs and plastics? Or is that a job someone's brother-in-law gets at the company?

Collectors should by all means not tolerate this stuff and we should all return the discs for replacement. Why? What happens if the sets go out of print and the discs we have in our collections have playback issues down the road. The situation will then be unplayable discs that cannot be replaced because the title is unavailable.

Immediately after reading this thread I checked all my Sony TV DVDs (and there are a lot of them). They look okay to me.

found clouding on a Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and Partridge Family set. Seems like I'll be putting all my slimline DVDs into paper envelopes.

Does this save the dvd? Or is it the dvd itself that is defective?

I found 2 of the Season 2 Hart to Hart dvds also have this problem.

I'm wondering if putting them into regular jewel cases will be okay. Can anyone offer some insight? Thanks
