Re: Mannix is coming!

Campanella's great, too bad his character got canned after S1, he has that awesome booming/commanding voice ala Robert Stack.

Interestingly NBC wasn't as enamored of Lucy and as a result Star Trek got no such leeway.

Yeah but didnt geller get fired from mission impossible after season 4? Was it cbs that fired him or desilu? Anyhow mannix is loads of fun and geller producting style is very prominent on mannix s1

It would not surprise me if Geller got fired or quit after Paramount took over. Paramount was not happy at all with the cost of the shows being produced at Desilu and cut the budgets on all of their shows.

as a kid, i remember Mission Impossible as taking place all over the world. Now I see how many times they merely shot around the soundstage. It wasn't even close to the exotic action of I Spy. Hard to think of them cutting the budget other than reduce that amount of tape that catches fire.

Mission Impossible was one of the most expensive shows done for television at the time. Much of it had to do with the fact that they frequently shot 10 or 12 days on a show that was supposed to be shot in 7. Geller was also something of a perfectionist and would have things re shot for shows that that had wrapped weeks before.

Interestingly I Spy was also shot at Desilu studios, although Desilu didn't produce that show. Sheldon Lenard who did produce the show was brilliant, and he knew how to stretch a dollar.

He had an unprecedented deal with NBC that allowed him to get half a season of scripts approved before shooting started. This allowed them to go to a particular location, say Hong Kong and film all of the location shots for the first half of a season in in about 6 weeks. You may notice that many of the shows for the first half of a season would be in again say Hong Kong, where the second half would be in Spain. Then they would return to Hollywood and shoot all of the interiors at Desilu.

I have to say that although I love Mission Impossible, I think I Spy is a better show.

Back on topic I'm really enjoying Mannix. I had forgotten how good this show was.

Re: Mannix is coming!

If I remember correctly, there's an oblique reference to Intertect (not by name) in the dialogue of an early second season episode; Mannix tells a client something along the lines of having gone out on his own because he's a loner by nature. Otherwise, there's no further mention of Intertect or Campanella's character, and no diegetic explanation of the format change.

Honest I agree Im a bigger fan of I Spy than mission impossible both were good shows. But MI for me was very depended on the caper they were going to pull off especially after season 3 . I Spy on the other hand had the great all time buddy teams of robert clup and bill cosby and some times a so so script could be saved by the acting talents of RC and BC and kelly and scottie were more real and devolped characters than any of the regulars in MI. Which honestly it one of the reasons why I like mannix more than MI. Joe Mannix is character we get to more and more about as the season 1 goes on , he's much more like a real person as time goes by you learn more about them as you get to know them over time, IM was never that inviting to viewer more distant. Well that my 2 cents why I enjoy mannix more than MI

This is Paramount, so you'd probably be more likely to get Season 2, Volume 1.

Re: Mannix is coming!

"Mannix" luckily seems to be getting the full season treatment, like "Hawaii Five-O", whereas others inexplicably get split up in volumes. Most annoying fo those shows. They ought to do whole seasons only, and quit this vol. nonsense.
