Will Sony release anymore classic tv on dvd this year?

It's been weeks since we've heard anything from them. We got the big announcement for Seinfeld but nothing about follow-ups on classic tv shows from the 70s or 80s. Are they finished for 2007? Things have been pretty quiet on the Sony homefront. I wonder what's going on.

Don't worry. All those 70's & 80's pseudo classics will continue to be released. On the other hand, the real classics that Sony owns - the ones from the 50's and 60's - will continue to languish in the vaults.

Gary "I'm so happy that Sony saw fit to release 'classics' like WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW and 227 instead of shows like FATHER KNOWS BEST or THE DONNA REED SHOW" O.

TV ON DVD HOLY GRAIL WANT LIST:

1960's & 70's - The Fugitive (S2-4), My Three Sons, The Patty Duke Show, Route 66 (S3-4), The Untouchables (S3-4), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (S4.5), Big Valley (S2.5-4), That Girl (S5), Flipper (S2-3), Tarzan, Petticoat Junction (S2-7), Beverly Hillbillies (S3-5), The Lucy Show, Harlem Globetrotters, Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Quincy (S3-8)

Sony appears to be clearing out some excess inventory. Over at Oldies.com, there are a number of sets ranging in price from $6.98 to $19.98 ($29.98 for "Dawson's Creek").

I really don't appreciate snide, patronizing comments like that. It's not like anything pre-Seinfeld is getting treated well. Not everything in the 1950s and 1960s was a classic.

Matthew "I am not only sick of quotes but of the condescending attitude towards post-1960s TV shows and can't wait for the rest of All in the Family but do not feel the need to put down shows you want released" A.

I know many people enjoy later shows but I'd love to see even a "Best of"
set for Donna Reed Show or Father Knows Best. I'd also appreciate it if anyone had any suggestions on how getting such releases could be accomplished?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery [i.e. the quotes in between your sig].

In all seriousness, there can be no comparison between the attitude Sony has taken with their 70's & 80's series versus their 50's/60's series. I mean come on, the ratio of releases is not even close. So lumping everything into a "pre-Seinfield" grouping is stacking the deck unfairly and is patently ridiculous.

Gary "this has nothing to do with being condescending and everything to do with just speaking the flat out truth - Sony does treat it's 70's/80's shows much, much better than it's 50's/60's classics" O.

Re: Will Sony release anymore classic tv on dvd this year?

I'm actually a lover of sitcoms from both eras. So if they ever decide to release more Hazel, then I'd definitely be there on the day of release to buy them.

Even though Sony doesn't own the rights to it, I'd love to see The Patty Duke Show released on dvd.

Matthew, I'm waiting for more All in the Family too. The episode of Edith's 50th Birthday should be on dvd by now. 3 more seasons...3 more years to wait, I guess.

I hope this clearing of inventory is making room for new releases.

I'd be in for more HAZEL and definitely buy PATTY DUKE SHOW releases! Two great choices, Robert.

Gary "who owns the rights to THE PATTY DUKE SHOW anyhow?" O.

I'm pretty sure that Fox owns the rights to Patty Duke. That's not a good sign. They didn't treat Cagney & Lacey so well on dvd. They didn't promote it and it wasn't available at most big chains.

Re: Will Sony release anymore classic tv on dvd this year?

Let me amend one more thing about Sony. I have long contended that Sony's TV division is allergic to anything in their catalog that is black & white. So while many of their late 60's shows have been released - BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, GIDGET, FLYING NUN, etc. - they have been very reluctant to dip into any series that had it's full run in black & white. So I'll amend my comments to say Sony's treatment of their b&w 50's/60's series are much worse than that of their color series that began in the mid to late 60's.

Gary "that amendment was added just in case anyone tried to get to legalistic with my definition of 50's/60's - I trust it's obvious the point I'm making about Sony and the approach they take to their vintage b&w material" O.
