Re: Speculation: What is the Reason a Following Season isnt Released?
Ron just posted an interesting story in the Green Acres thread about TV on DVD, and why things dont get released.

Re: Speculation: What is the Reason a Following Season isnt Released?
After reading this thread and the one from Ron on Green Acres, maybe we could start a "commitment" section (for the lack of a better word), where people could let the studios know they for sure would buy a given dvd. I know that tvshowsondvd has a wanted listed, but maybe something a bit more definite. The people on the committed list would be saying they are going to buy a dvd for sure.
I'm guessing not everyone on tvshowsondvd has bought everything on their wanted listed, but at one point they checked on an item saying "Yes, I'd consider this product if it was out". This commitment list would be more absolute than that.
Perhaps the studios would see 10,000 committed people, and they know the profit line is at 50,000 dvd sales for a particular dvd, and they'd be willing to take a chance, as they'd be at a 20% automatic base sale number already.
I don't know what this magic sales percentage would be, 10%, 25% whatever, but it might be useful to the studios. If they see that western series X from the 50s has a committed number of 150, and western series Y from the 50s has 5,000 committed people, it could push series Y into distribution.
Perhaps even have people give their e-mail on this commitment list to show their dedication. Between this site and tvshowsondvd, I think there is a lot of respect for the users being knowledgable and reasonable. Of course this commitment list is a very preliminary idea, and many things would have to implemented, but maybe it could work.
TV DVDs wanted: TJ Hooker (seasons 3-5), The Fall Guy (Seasons 2-5), Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Father Dowling Mysteries, Queen of Swords, Smurfs, and Charlemagne (1994 TV miniseries)

Sorry - hate to contradict you, but stuff from before 1990/1970 gets released all the time. Putting aside cult stuff from the 60's like Doctor Who or the old school Star Trek, I'm currently watching the old Filmation stuff (Ark II, Ghostbusters, Jason of Star Command and so on), already have a huge pile of old Krofft stuff from the 60's and 70's, just picked boxed set of random cop shows from the 50's, and just got done with two of the four Cult Movie boxed sets that Warner put out (the bulk of which was from the 50's and 60's - aside from Skyjacked, which was mid 1970's). And that's just a random sampling of stuff off the top of my head. If I were to look at my collection, I'd bet there's a ton more examples I could pull.
So while they may not be releasing shows (and movies) YOU want, they do release shows (and movies) from ancient history pretty consistantly.

Re: Speculation: What is the Reason a Following Season isnt Released?
The only way I would buy a DVD for sure is if it meets certain minimum standards of quality, mainly that there are no edits. I have never pre-ordered a TV-DVD without seeing a review from a source which mentions running times.
And Tony, those are the exception, not the rule. Warner found a way to make money with catalog titles, but where are the other studios? And those Filmation shows were put out by BCI, weren't they?

Maybe if it involved actually slapping down money. It's easy to sign up for something on the internet, but no matter what you call it, it's not binding. I don't think this would be any different from any other on-line petition unless money changed hands - say either a $5 non-refundable deposit or paying for it up front (with the money potentially refunded if the product doesn't come out within a certain amount of time). That's real "commitment".
Of course, the first studio to try this will be slaughtered, PR-wise.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.
Transplanted Life: Sci-fi soap opera about a man placed in a new body, updated two or three times a week.
Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.
"What? Since when was this an energy ball movie?" - Overheard during a screening of Takashi Miike's Dead Or Alive
"What the hell religion are you people?" - Overheard during the Captain Marvel serial at SF/29

Matt, I completely agree that at a minimum the episodes would have to be uncut, and unless there are some major reasons why not, with intact music.

The only acceptable reason for music substitutions is the rights holder saying "not at any price." And someone who has denied the rights to said song (or songs) from others before.

I've spoken with various people about music rights issue. And there is a point where you can't afford to buy the rights to a song. Song publishers have gone out of control in their money demands because the CD market has been going down the tubes. They needs to make up for the loss of publishing fees with all the money not showing up thanks to P2P downloading.
As much as I hate music replacement, if done properly, I'm not going to get too anal about it.
I'm just hoping Paramount puts out all the Odd Couples in fast order like they did with Hogan's Heroes.

You can't really blame downloading for all the music industry's woes. Part of it is that people are getting sick of the lousy music they're putting out.
