Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo Questions?

What network aired the classic children's shows, Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo from the 60's-70's. I remember watching those shows as a kid. How long did they last? Is it known whether any of the episodes from these shows still exist today?

The Captain was CBS in my market. Romper Room was syndicated in my area with local hosts.

Yeah, Romper Room (like Bozo the Clown in the early days) wasn't so much syndicated at it was franchised. The same format and even some of the same scripted material was produced live with local hosts in each market. So different kids in different cities remember different Romper Rooms and there was never any central repository that kept kinescopes or tapes of all of them. (And the local channels probably saved very little of the material, since no one at the time thought there would be any future value in a disposable live show.)

Regards,

Joe

Re: Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo Questions?

2" masters of Captain Kangaroo from the mid-70s do survive as the material was repeated on PBS and most recently featured on "I Love the 70's". I've also seen some clips from a studio master of a color 60's episode.

CBS, being the #1 network at the time, was on the whole a lot better at preserving their VT library than their competitors (ABC wasn't able to afford archiving anything until 1976, and NBC was still junking stuff as late as 1982*!)

*although exactly what and why they were junking is a subject of debate

Someone told me, and he swears, that in real life Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan) and Mr. Green Jeans (Lumpy Brannum) were lovers. Does anyone know if that's true?

Of course not. Whoever told you that oughta be ashamed. That's as disrespectful as the equally false urban legend that Mr. Rogers was a military sniper who wore sweaters to hide tattoos.

Another false tale has to do with Keeshan and Lee Marvin being in the service together and seeing action.

CBS does have quiet a few Kinescopes of 1950's and 1960's episodes as well.

But then CBS was also VERY GOOD at saving their kinescopes, too!
