Farscape - A buying convolution?
I have not seen so many different box sets, vlumes, collections, versions and assortments of a TV seried before. Am interested in buying Farscape, potentially, but can make absolutley no sense from places like Amazon and other retailers as to how to buy this show. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
If you dont mind buying R2, I'd recommend the complete season sets that were released in the UK plus the final miniseries The Peacekeeper Wars. They are pretty comprehensive in containing the majority of the extras that have been released over the variety of releases in R1 and R2 and the presentation is excellent if you dont mind PAL.

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high, And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm, there's a golden cloud, and the sweet silver song of a lark,
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, Though your dreams may be tossed and blown,
Walk on, Walk on, with hope in your heart and you'll never walk alone,
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE!!

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
For R1 the best choice would be the 12 "Starburst Editions".
Each "Starburst Edition" (labeled Volume 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.) comes with about 7-to-8 episodes and a bonus disc of extras. (The extras include documentaries, time lines, character studies, retrospectives, storyboards, and more!) So you get about 3 bonus discs/season. Many of the episodes also include audio commentaries from the producers and actors. Each episode disc also includes trivia regarding the episodes; as well as a brief analysis of aliens unique to those episodes. (As a Star Trek fan I would *kill* for this level of extras for TOS, TNG, and DS9!).
The "Starburst Editions" started out being packaged on two DVD-18 discs; but--due to consumer complaints regarding the double-sided format--ADV switched to four single-sided DVD-9 discs/package about halfway through the run. I've heard that all the "Starburst Editions" are now available on DVD-9 and that would be the preferred way of collecting them.
If you go with the "Starburst Editions", you will have to separately purchase the series wrap-up miniseries "The Peacekeeper Wars".

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
The ADV Starburst editions for season 1 are getting hard to find (as in OOP) until another edition shows up from Sony, who scooped up the rights recently.
ADV is offering the other seasons for sale.

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
Season has gone out of print. They're no longer being made since Sony snatched up the rights to the series. Andromeda is going that way too. My guess is that ADV Films is no longer producing new copies and that as soon as ADV Films runs out of their stock that Sony is going to announce plans for their release. I would hold off buying them.

You're right, it's an awful mess, which is too bad as the series itself is really worth having.
If you can go region-free and don't mind fewer extras, the Australian season sets are cheapest. They can be bought on eBay easily.
For Region 1, as Joseph said, the 12 Starbursts are best, except that finding season 1 is becoming tricky. Aside from a few full sets that come up on eBay, the only retailer still carrying season 1 is Exyte.com, but only bundled with the other seasons.

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
I'd be interested in the Sony releases as well. Any idea when they will be out. I only saw 3/4 of season 1 when it was on TV and quite enjoyed it.

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
Well, if you really want it, you could always buy the original release on the secondary market. Half.com has a bunch for less than $3 a DVD.
Course, I know this because I have a few still sitting out there unbought...

Re: Farscape - A buying convolution?
Well, I'd probably consider selling the entire series that I have for a reasonable price ...
