CBS New Packaging.

I notice CBS/Paramount seem to be favouring new style packing for their series.

Witness 'The Untouchables' with the cheapy looking case & no photo or artwork on the discs. You have to actually remove the outer sleeve to see the episodes titles. Seems some of their other releases are adopting this packing also.

I much prefer slimlines in a slip case. Even PD outfits like Alpha put a picture on their discs. I would rather pay an extra dollar or so for classier packing.Any thoughts ?

Also I note some of their releases now say 'The Second Season' instead of 'The Complete Second Season' etc. (Take a look at the'Gunsmoke'artwork for example. I hope this is not significant.

It's not. It's just the opposite of releases that say "The Complete xth Season" and have edits.

I'm not too pleased about it either. I think we can expect the same for the "Rawhide" S2 half season sets, which will make it appear that S1 and what follows to look as though they were done by two different studios.

Re: CBS New Packaging.

Could someone post a picture of this new packaging (showing how the discs are stored).

Thanks.

I like being able to fit five DVDs into a single case. Anything to take up less space on the shelves without stacking. Does stink that they're going with the single pass gray, but it keeps the overhead low.

If its keeping the costs down so that Paramount doesn't have to sell Seinfeld numbers of units to keep a series going, I'm all for it. The money is better spent on the transfers (at least in the case of the Odd Couple and Untouchables).

Joe, I agree with you on this. When I first saw "The Untouchables" on the shelf at Walmart, I was surprised to see 4 discs inside of what looked to be a traditional, single disc case. But the single-sided discs were well anchored inside the case and, yes, it does mean less space on the shelf . . . a good thing, as far as I'm concerned. I think the greater criticism that I'd aim at Paramount is the inconsistency that they're showing in releasing some classic TV-on-DVD sets as full seasons and others as half seasons. For example, "Wild Wild West," "Hawaii Five-0," and "Mission: Impossible" all get full season releases while "Perry Mason," "The Untouchables," "The Streets of San Francisco," and, soon to be, season two of "Rawhide" get half seasons. Frankly, among the major studios, I like Paramount the best (by a wide margin) . . . with a few exceptions, their transfers are really solid for older material and that's probably what's most important to me. I can live with split seasons, but I just don't understand the inconsistency that Paramount is currently demonstrating with their classic TV releases.

It's also interesting how, Hawaii Five-0 and Sabrina had their 2nd Season release dates leaked to tvshowsondvd.com only two weeks after their Season 1 releases in March. While for other shows the scheduling is a secret, and uncertain, supposedly decided on sales reports and chicken bones.

Bob H, I agree. The xfrs are what's important to me and I like the shelf-space savings. I admit that I prefer the one-sided discs with the ep guides and artwork. But, like you all said, Paramount's doing a good (xfr) job with most of their sets.

As for the half-season vs full-s releases, if someone can figure that one out they'll be able to retire If there's a pattern, I sure don't se it.

Tony Newman and Doug Phillips now tumble helplessly toward a new, fantastic adventure...somewhere along the infinite corridors of Time."

Re: CBS New Packaging.

I do wonder if the guys in marketing have decided that for older shows that haven't had much play on TVLand, it's easier for them to sell them at half season prices in order to appeal to a senior citizen? Do they figure that a 65 year old guy would be more open to buying half a season of Untouchables after they pick up their supply of pills at Wal-Mart?

But is annoying that the full season of Mission Impossible costs as much as the half season of Untouchables and Perry mason.

Well The Untouchables, The Streets of San Francisco, along with the future release of The Fugitive (as season 1 volume 1 ) are of course all Quinn Martin productions if that has anything to do with it. It could very well be just a coincidence, but I wonder.
