Roots: The Next Generations...Coming to dvd this fall!

Finally! I saw a trailer for this on the IMDB entry for the series. Maybe they'll release a complete collection box with Roots, this, and Roots: The Gift.

Re: Roots: The Next Generations...Coming to dvd this fall!

I'm just happy to see this one finally re-released. I'm hoping for a release as it originally aired in the 70's. This is one that I've never seen so I'm looking forward to this big-time.

- Jeff Willis (Mainly a late 50's - mid-90's TV/DVD Collector)

"Combat! A Selmur Production"

"Two American scientists are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages during the first experiments on America's greatest and most secret project...THE TIME TUNNEL! Tony Newman and Doug Phillips now tumble helplessly toward a new, fantastic adventure...somewhere along the infinite corridors of Time."

This one has a better chance than the original of being uncut. It was originally presented in seven two-hour episodes (over eight nights.) The vhs release presented the original teasers, credits, and previews. The original WB logo will probably be replaced, though. I just wish Roots was uncut as well.

Scott, I was unable to view the trailer at IMDB. Perhaps because I have not registered on the site. I did notice this great news a few days ago on amazon.com where someone else had mentioned they also viewed the same trailer. This person mentioned that not only will it be available this fall, but also that Roots: The Complete Collection will be made available. However he did not specify any time period for it. Did you see this also? If so then hopefully it will indeed be complete as you stated, meaning it will also have Roots: The Gift.

I already have the 25th anniversary release, so unless the 30th anniversary edition was presented as originally aired then I was going to stick with what I already have. However if this complete collection is going to become reality I will definitely wait for it instead of buying Roots: TNG separately, even if The Gift is not included.

Anyone that loves Roots should also seriously consider getting Roots: TNG.

What was cut from "Roots", violence or dialogue?

Re: Roots: The Next Generations...Coming to dvd this fall!

Henry, when the series originally aired, four episodes were two hours in length and four episodes were one hour. The one hour episodes had footage (part of the storyline) that played during the cast credits at the beginning of the episode. There is one episode that had footage of George Hamilton and another of the slaves working in the fields (beautiful photography in this scene.) I didn't see the other one hour episode openings. The footage was quite lengthy..around 5 mins. per episode. Also, the closing credits were taken out as well. I don't know if anything else is missing..you know how it can happen though when episodes are shuffled around in syndication. The opening credits were the same, except for the title Roots. Originally the title was displayed as the cover of the book with "An ABC Novel For Television" appearing on screen.

Incidentally, when viewing a copy of the original broadcast, I noticed that most of the commercials were promos for other ABC shows. That would support the history that claims sponsors were afraid to be connected with the series because of the subject matter and for fear it would fail. I was also taken back to my childhood when I saw the Budweiser horses in the snow.

You're welcome, Henry. Incidentally, I'm writing a book about Roots. It is tough getting interviews, because I'm a first time writer.
