Cagney & Lacey .... season 2?

I am torn about if I should consider buying the recently announced Cagney & Lacey set starting in season 2 when Sharon Glass came into the series and not with the six episodes of the first season with Meg Foster or the pilot movie. I have never seen either the Foster episodes or the pilot... but I am also a completist.

Anyone have thoughts?

Re: Cagney & Lacey .... season 2?

I think this decision came down to a marketing strategy; Gless wouldn't be involved in the promotion of the set if they started with season 1, so they're doing season 2 first, and calling it season 1 (otherwise the marketplace would be confused). I'd have to think that they'll do something like "The Early Episodes" later, and release the pilot movie and 6 episode season 1. Of course that's assuming this set sells...

I guess if Cagney proves a success on DVD, in due time we'll see a release of "Season 0.5"

I will be buying this on release Date regardless been waiting awhile for it. I did however vote in the sony poll for complete 1+2. But i am not going to deprive myself of the best of cagney&lacey by boycotting this over 6 episodes. Anyways Sharon&Tyne is why the show is remembered it makes sense to release it this way when thinking about it. But they coulda just added 1 more disc for the real first season and been smart. That way they still market it with Sharon and Tyne. Oh Well still going to be great to watch again.

I wonder if it would it be out of the realm of possibility that we see something like a Best Buy or Target including a bonus disc with the 6 episodes + pilot. I remember when i bought boston legal S1 they offered a bonus disc with the alan shore/ denny crane episodes from the practice. I think that would be the best way to go about getting S1 out there for the die hards.

I think that's "a way," not "the best way" since many people would be left out in the cold. I don't see Fox doing something like this anyway; it would cost them too much money (we're talking about 8 episodes worth of material here), and would be best left as something they can release later.

Gord: yea but it was FOX who released Boston Legal with the Exclusive Bonus Disc at Best Buy. I hear what your saying though. That only had 4 or 5 episodes and this would be abit more.

Another option could be to include a mail in offer for those episodes with the set. Charge $9.99 or something and purchasing that you would get $5 off the next cagney set that comes out.

you should be in charge of these companies, you use a lot more logic and smarts than the companies do at times

Re: Cagney & Lacey .... season 2?

This is not Baywatch. Why are they screwing with the season labels like that ? They could release this set with the proper title and the world would not come to an end. People aren't going to refuse to buy it just because they're wondering where season one is. Fans of this show know about it's history and that Sharon Gless did not originate the part.

At the very least I hope we will get all of the remaining seasons and at some point a box of the TV movie and Meg's unfairly-maligned mini-season. The show did get better later on, definitely. But Loretta Switt was an excellent original Cagney.

FYI: Loretta attempted to get out of her M*A*S*H contract to star on the subsequent series version but could not get released. The producers were interested in Sharon for the first season but she was on the sitcom House Calls (where she famously replaced Lynn Redgrave). After CBS insisted that Meg be replaced after season one, Tyne was furious and almost refused to help get Sharon to finally accept the part. Thankfully for them and all of us it worked out.

Re: Cagney & Lacey .... season 2?

while we've discussed the first season with Meg Foster, a more important (IMO) discussion to the show would be how season 3 (or season 2 in Fox terms) is going to be handled. It's pretty well known that Cagney And Lacey was cancelled in the spring of 1983 but it's solid fanbase wrote one of the most persuasive letter-writing campaigns in the history of television (unfortunately, it seems like these never work anymore) and CBS ended up bringing the show back in the spring of 1984 with a short but highly rated third season. Season 3 only ran seven episodes so I am curious how Fox is going to work it.

I see one of three options:
a) combining the short Meg Foster season 1, season 3 and the Loretta Swit tv movie, would work in a strange way, all three Cagney's in one set and the Foster episodes would probably sell better tagged with the Gless episodes than by themselves.
b) releasing season 3 as a cheap standalone (remember Tru Calling season 2?)
c) combining season 3 and season 4 together

what do the rest of you think?

nobody? I was really interested in hearing others takes on how the third season will be handled if season 2 (1) sells enough

Combining S3 with either S2 or S4 is fine by me. I don't really care one way or the other. The main thing is if we get to that decision it means S1 has sold well enough for more releases to come out. That is all i am hoping for at this point.
