True Mini Series and Novels for Television
In what laughably passes for a mini series today, nothing more that a 3 or 4 hour movie shown in installments. With the exception of Roots, I wonder if we are ever going to see what the 70’s and early 80’s TV did better that any other medium period. A true mini series, now with all the fever over TV season sets, where is the novels for television “Rich Man, Poor Man, Book 1”, “Rich Man, Poor Man, Book 2” “Masada” “Salem’s Lot” “A.D.” and the biggest of them “Centennial”.
Just the amount of allocates and awards alone make one ponder if the owners of these properties know what they have. It is arguably better than most of what passes for entertainment on TV today. Is there any chance that these will ever see an actual release? Not edited down movie versions!

The original "Salem's Lot" has been available, in full form, for a number of years, courtesy of Warner; see the Amazon listing:

Re: True Mini Series and Novels for Television
The main problem with the release of the miniseries from this era is that the majority of them were produced by Universal, who have proven that they are fairly clueless about exploiting their back libraries. The fact that Universal has finally agreed to license material at least leaves some hope that an independent might consider releasing some of their miniseries library.

Re: True Mini Series and Novels for Television
All three books of North and South are available and have been for quite some time. I'm not sure about the presentation, though.

Re: True Mini Series and Novels for Television
I'd get an R1 release of 'Rich Man Poor Man' in a "Texas" minute It's out in R2 but the xfrs aren't great. Book 2 is still not available anywhere.
'Masada' is another good one. I forgot about that one until this thread.
I recently bought 'Winds Of War' after a memory-jog from HTF
Fortunately for me, one (IMO) of the best miniseries is available, 'Shogun'.
With the re-release of 'Roots' coming May 22, I can't think of any more miniseries that I'd add to my collection at the moment, but I'll see if more of the HTF'ers get my memory going again Just remembered one that I'm waiting for big-time: 'How the West Was Won'. I'd love to see that one released. [edit time again] 'And the Sea Will Tell'
- Jeff Willis (Mainly a late 50's - mid-90's TV/DVD Collector)
"Combat! A Selmur Production"
"Two American scientists are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages during the first experiments on America's greatest and most secret project...THE TIME TUNNEL! Tony Newman and Doug Phillips now tumble helplessly toward a new, fantastic adventure...somewhere along the infinite corridors of Time."

I found that the R2 RMPM (Book 1) transfers were fairly clean. I was just thinking about some of the other Universal miniseries that were being ground out during that period:
Rich Man, Poor Man (Book II) (although not technically a miniseries)
Centennial
Black Beauty
Loose Change
Once An Eagle
Aspen
Wheels
The Contender
Family Reunion
Little Women

Re: True Mini Series and Novels for Television
I loved the opening titles for these presentations, with the book's cover serving as the title. Roots was one of these. I hope the new dvd has this, but I don't know considering that "AN ABC NOVEL FOR TELEVISION" appears on-screen.
