Dragon Ball Z Boxsets

I see that Funimation are going to release the first season of DBZ shortly - under the banner of Season One - The Vegeta Saga.

Anyone know if they plan to release all the following seasons?

I never started on the DBZ DVD's because they offered such poor value for money and there were so many of them! Three measly episodes per disc was not attractive.

I'd go for complete season sets though, specially if they're priced like this one, which is six discs.

I only caught on to the show when the Cartoon Channel ran them years ago, and I missed everything up to about a third of the way in to the Frieza stuff.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Boxsets

Hope so. The DBZ DVD releases are a hopeless mess; some came out in individual discs only, some came out in single discs *and* boxset sagas (for example the Kid Buu Saga). They tended to come in and out of print and were of course pretty much extra-less. And probanly were cut.

A full release of the series, in Season sets, uncut, would certainly be very welcome; I'm reluctant to commit, though, if they aren't going to do this.

The main complaint about this new set due, is that the original series was - as you might expect - made in 1.33:1 because it was made for TV some time ago, whereas apparently they've jiggled the episodes for this set into widescreen when it shouldn't be. With attendant cropping.

The customer reviews say "watch the trailer for how this and *the upcoming sets* were remastered....

Re: Dragon Ball Z Boxsets

I've just watched the advertising trailer for this - you can find it here

http://media.funimation.com/trailers...Amaz_Small.wmv

(This is the low-bandwidth version).

Anyhow, it seems that Funimation are indeed releasing DBZ *in it's entirety*. It will be taken in genuine high-definition from the original masters, cleaned up on a frame-by-frame basis, and will be presented for the first time uncut (including original Japanese track).

The only complaint seems to be the new 16:9 aspect ratio.

I'm pretty excited by this!

Re: Dragon Ball Z Boxsets

It is the one that is due to be released on Febuary 6th. It is entitled "Dragon Ball Z - Season One - Vegeta Saga (Uncut)"

It is located here on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Se...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

This page also has a link to the trailers about the new releases - including a better quality one for those lucky folk with broadband.

All the previous releases are as they were shown on TV outside Japan and have a tendancy to be cut. Also, they were very messy, as the releases were done by Pioneer and then Funimation. They also tended to be sometimes single disc only, sometimes in boxed sets. The single disc ones were poor value, with only three episodes per disc, at a high price.

The new releases are not only remastered and uncut, with optional original Japanese track, but are way better value - you can pick up this 6-disc set (39 episodes) for under $30. Also it seems to include a whole bunch of tasty extras.

It's just the DBZ release I've been waiting for!

Hope that helps!

Is there a way to know what was being cut in the first place?

Re: Dragon Ball Z Boxsets

This was the first anime series that I really got into, and it was like watching an animated soap opera with an ever ongoing plot, so I just had to find out what happened next. I bought all the single disc releases, minus the Vegita and Piccolo saga, and I still spent about $999's over the course of 3 or 4 years. I sold them all for a bargain at $160 .

Those crummy 'box sets' where just the single volumes literally put into a card board box, with all the original packaging. Probably not even a price discount compared to buying them individually.

I just hope the HDDVD or Blue-Ray versions have both the 'widescreen' and original full frame in hi-def on the same season set disc...because you KNOW Funi is going to milk both formats .

If there is an announcement for those, I'll wait on these .
