Will Cold Case ever make it to DVD?

I've heard there are issues with music rights yet the show continues to play a song at the end of every episode. I missed Season 1 and would love to buy it.
Is there any hope?

I would like to see this show on DVD as well.

I am surprised it hasn't been, and thought music rights wouldn't be much of an issue with today's shows.

The producers have stated the music is so important to the show, they aren't even thinking about DVD release, as it would be way too expensive.

I thought it was foolish, until I saw an episode. And, the music was a HUGE part of it. It would hurt it to remove, and be too expensive to release as is.

Unlike the shows I desire from the 60s and 70s, you at least had the option to record it yourself when it aired.

To make a TV show nowadays without giving thought to a probable DVD release is downright stupid! Shame on the Cold Case producers- if they know that they're gonna make episodes with certain songs, they should've had the brains to make clearance plans for a future DVD release!

True. However anyone who really likes a current show, especially one that contains pop songs, should have the brains to record it themselves and not count on the studios to release it in the exact form that it aired. If not, then they shouldn't complain when they either get music replacements or in the case of this show, nothing.

Re: Will Cold Case ever make it to DVD?

well, sometimes people won't get into a show until it's late and miss the opportunity.

I don't think many people decided when Cold Case premiered "okay, this is going to become one of my favorite shows" and taped it from the start.

Plus, I don't have a DVR and frankly DVD's are far more convienient for me to own than bulky VHS tapes. I'm glad I can chuck out those VHS recordings I made of reruns of shows like Ellen and Roseanne by having a superior quality version on DVD than on video.

However, I don't get why Warner didn't even give Cold Case a chance on DVD. I am a big fan of Supernatural, which is another Warner-owned current series that uses a ton of rock music from the 1970's and 1980's and they've used music by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones and others during key moments of the show, and EVERYTHING transferred to DVD flawlessly and it was all there, I don't see why they couldn't negotiate the music for Cold Case on DVD considering they did so for Supernatural and the set sold pretty well. Whose to say Cold Case wouldn't sell too? I mean, I don't think CCR and the Stones are exactly the cheapest artists to negotiate usage on a DVD release and they did just that with Supernatural, they could easily do the same with Cold Case if they tried.

What makes you sure they haven't tried? The average episode of Cold Case contains four or five songs, which means a season set will require roughly a hundred clearances. That it would be just as "easy" to negotiate rights for Cold Case as it is for Supernatural (and who says that was easy?) is by no means a given.

As to not pre-clearing songs being stupid/irresponsible, remember how tight television production is - there's often something like a month between a show being written and it being aired. For a show where music plays as big a part as it does as Cold Case, nailing down the rights for broadcast is the most important job. There's still a lot more money in broadcast/re-run revenue than there is in home video, so that has to be the priority.

Unfortunately, during the fall, it's a pain to follow the show on CBS, because of the football overruns. Either I wait until football season ends, or just catch the repeats on TNT.

Thanks for reminding me that we can record shows nowadays. Perhaps these threads should only permit questions or discussions about shows that one could NOT record---say, pre-1975.
I did not hear about the show until its Second Season.

Harsh and judgmental comment. Also foolish.
There are several great shows that I have purchased on DVD not because I did not 'have the brains to record it' but because I did not even KNOW about the show.
Try to restrain yourself guy.
How

yes I agree with both of you, plus, my family didn't even get a VCR until 1985, so how the hell would I, as a really young kid, know how to record shows in 1981 with the "well, I know in 2006 I'll really wanna see this show again?" especially since it'd be a few years before we even had one. Get real. So you had a VCR in 1978 and knew how to preserve things for future usage, good for you- most of us are NOT you. As a kid watching uncut season one Cosby Show episodes in 1984-1985, I had no idea that I would be deprived of seeing them uncut 20 years later. Also, at the same time, I didn't realize how much syndication cut out until the late 90's, it never crossed my mind that those USA cuts of The Facts Of Life weren't the same cuts I saw on NBC when I was six.
If people want to buy current shows, it's our prerogative. The golden age of TV may have passed, but I don't agree with those who believe that good TV ended when MTM left the airwaves.
