Medical Dramas List required
Could someone point me in the right direction. I tried Googling but I can't seem to get an exhaustive and complete list of every medical drama produced for television - specifically U.S. and Canada since the beginning of television. I believe the first was Dr. Kildare. As an offshoot list, I wouldn't mind getting a list of all medical comedy television shows. Help anyone? Curious to see what ranks as the best in both categories. Finally, I'd cross reference the lists to determine what's available on DVD and what's to come.

I don't know of any comprehensive list of medical shows but I can tell you that Dr. Kildare was not the first medical show. I can think of two shows from the mid-1950s, "Medic" with Richard Boone as Dr. Konrad Styner and "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal" with John Howard. If you want to stretch it a bit, Jack Webb even produced a show about veterinarians that starred Paul Burke titled "Noah's Ark." There may have even been some earlier shows, but these are what come to mind. "Medic" and "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal" have some episodes available on DVD from public domain specialists like Alpha Video and Critics Choice.

Here's the more recent hospital shows that I can think of:
Chicago Hope
E.R.
Grey's Anatomy
House
Nightengales (circa 1989)
Nurses (comedy, NBC 1991-94)
Scrubs (comedy)
St. Elsewhere
Strong Medicine
And dozens more, some popular, some not. And so, does Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman count?? Or M*A*S*H*, for that matter? Quincy?
p.s.: Ethan Riley was an extra on five of the above mentioned tv shows!

Thanks people. I checked with TV.com but they have all dramas listed in one place (including hospital/medical dramas). Bob, thanks for the site - that takes me into the 60's but not exhaustive.
Not sure if Quincy falls under "police" drama as CSI does. MASH is definitely medical comedy (but then again, the last 2-3 years would describe it more as drama - I could see your point).
The search continues.

Are you interested in all medical dramas or just the important ones? The big ones that come immediately to mind:
Ben Casey (the best IMO)
Dr. Kildare
Marcus Welby MD
Medical Center
St. Elsewhere
Chicago Hope
ER
Trapper John MD
The New Doctors (part of the Bold Ones)
Among other less successful shows there was The Interns, Medical Story, Doctor's Private Lives, The Doctor, Medic, Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal, Doctor's Hospital, Dr. Simon Locke (aka Police Surgeon) and I'm sure others more recent that don't come to mind.

Not really if you don't mind doing some research. Get ahold of a copy of Total Television by MacNeil and The Complete Guide to Prime Time Network TV Shows by Brooks and Marsh. Then go through it. That will take you up until the last B&M update, which was 2 or 3 years back. You'll need both as B&M does not include all syndicated shows, especially the older ones. |

The mid-50s "Janet Dean, R.N." series, with Ella Raines, is one to add to your list. I've never seen an episode, but I've been hoping Alpha might serve up a volume, on the heels of their "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal" release. Depending, of course, on whether it is in the p.d. realm or not. Both those series were syndicated (instead of being network items), which seems to render them a bit more forgotten, I suppose. Although come to think of it, there was another medical series, "The Doctor," in the early-1950s, which 'was' a network (NBC) item, and I guess it's even more obscure, if that's possible. It was rerun under the title "The Visitor," which is how it was apparently still seen as late as the early-1970s on a struggling, shoestring UHF station I know of.
