What's the deal with Classic 39 Honeymooners?

I'd thought I'd mention it here since perhaps it has been discussed long before I was a member.

The transfers on Paramount's classic Honeymooners seem to have had what I thought at the time were compression artifacts.

Clothing and wall textures seemed to float sometimes and were not "anchored down"

I'm wondering if someone knows for sure but I'm starting to beleive these are the artifacts are due to some sort of film grain reduction effort.

Was it ever discussed around here and what did you guys and gals conclude?

I recall no such discussion. My set has no such artifacts. I suggest trying a different player on a different system.

Someone else may have a better answer to your questions, but I thought the picture quality was great considering that The Honeymooners wasn't filmed, but recorded on kinescope. Most shows recorded in the late 1940s and 1950s, when broadcasted live especially, were recorded this way. The Honeymooners is one of the better-looking shows recorded on kinescope.

Actually, the classic 39 Honeymooners was not recorded on kinescope, but 35mm film using the ill-fated Dumont Electronicam System. Some historical info can be found

I've seen these things on more than one set up. Let me see if you can see a few examples of what I talk about. Disc five, episode is "Unconventional Behavior"

APX 5:00 Pocket detail on Ralph's Jacket (as well as the texture of the jacket) appear to jiggle a bit as Norton Talks.

APX 8:10 Parts of Ralph's jacket zipper disappear as he shifts around and talks

APX 20:07 When Ralph and Norton are putting thier Raccoon coats back on. Note how the Lopel details sort of disappears and reappears with movement.

APX 21:15 The texture on the padded headrest in the sleeping berth jiggles.

Probably caused by DVNR artifacts.
