As much comedy and sci-fi as I watch, I was quite surprised that I still did not find this "old stuff" old hat, there's some genuinely unique stuff going on here.
Most of my issues with III stem from Bob Llwellan's performance as Kryten being very "off" from where it should be. Otherwise its great.

Season 5 however is pretty amazing.

Re: Red Dwarf: Help Me!

Like Philip and Tony, I guess I'm in the minority, but I prefer the first two series. Yeah, they were low-budget, but I liked the whole tone and the idea that perhaps, just perhaps, they were indeed the only beings left alive in the universe. The other series weren't bad (indeed, they were quite funny), but I think the show lost a little something the more the RD universe expanded.

Indeed. Norman's bits were among the best of those first two series. Strangely, I didn't enjoy his series 8 reappearances, though. He seemed a bit too "happy to be there."

i certainly miss the lovely Claire Grogan as Kochanski in her earliest appearances. was so disappointed when another actress took over the part.

Well, she might've been cute, but judging from her appearances in series 1-2, Clare really wasn't strong enough an actress, which was the main reason the producer(s) gave for deciding to recast in the first place. Chloe Annett (her replacement from series 7-8) is a much stronger actress, from what I reckon. And she's also quite a looker, to boot!

Re: Red Dwarf: Help Me!

Finally ordered Series VII and VIII last week since they're on sale again. Tell me: does series VII really only have 1 disc as amazon says? Compared to the 3 in VIII. I'm trying to figure out how the complete set (IMO a very good deal now) supposedly has 18 discs, which means Series VII and VIII have 3 discs each, or there are some bonus discs, or... Thanks.

Series III is still my favorite so far, V and VI were good too.

Re: Red Dwarf: Help Me!

As a massive Red Dwarf fan since the show first debuted, my opinion:

Series 1 & 2: Fun, but typical low budget BBC comedy.
Series 3 & 4: Production values upped considerably. Shows far more inventive.
Series 5: Fantastic. Pinnacle of the show. My favourite series.
Series 6: Lame. Of course the entire series' plot was conceived because, if mythology is believed, someone dropped the model of the ship they used for the effects and it broke. Though the last episode is genius.
Series 7 & 8: If it was a horse they'd have shot it.
