Jeremy Brett Shelock Holmes series question(s)

I vaugely remember seeing this TV series way back when. This is the best one right? How about quality of the DVDs? Are they complete (non-syndicated)? I read on tvtome Jeremy Brett died and they decided not to film the rest of the stories, how many didn't get filmed? I own a copy of the complete set of sherlock holmes stories in the 2 volume hard bound "The Annotated Sherlock Homlmes" ed. William S Barring-Gould, Clarkson N. Potter, Inc./Publisher.

These are considered the best adaptation of Holmes. Quality
varies however, as the early releases were rarely better then vhs. The recent Casebook and Memoirs are simply gorgeous and the packaging states these are transfered from
the original negative. One of the commentary states that 19
of the original stories were never filmed. The commentary
also mentions that Jeremy Brett was dying during the filming of Memoirs and often collasped after filming
strenuous scenes. These are released by MPI and I dont know if they plan to revisit the early releases or not.
I also think they are worth having despite the varying quality from episode to episode.Hope this helps

Generally, each set got better in terms of audio and video quality (and yes there were audio issues, especially in the first set). The order of releases was The Adventures, The Sherlock Holmes Feature Film Collection, The Return, The Casebook, and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.
Of all these, I found the FFC to be the worst, with quality varying wildly from film to film and two of the films (out of 5 I believe) to be terrible adaptations.
As for quality of the adaptations, though they all have fantastic performances and usually some stylish directing, the Adventures and the Casebook I thought were best. Overall, the Return and the Memoirs are very good, but they do contain some weaker adaptations. In some cases, it's because the stories themselves were not as good. After a certain point, Conan Doyle was writing for money and was no longer as interested in the characters and this is evident to serious fans. The stories are still good, but perhaps just slightly less excellent sometimes.
