This is my favorite Wo Fat episode, for all of the reasons you cited. Season 2 is where Five-0 really hit its stride. The music, acting, plots, guest stars, action all improved over the already-great season 1. My favorites from this season (several of which are my all time favorite episodes) are:
Savage Sunday- Five-0 vs. militants planning an overthrow of their country

Sweet Terror- International terrorists try to wipe out Hawaii's sugar crop

Singapore File- McGarrett at sea trying to protect a gorgeous witness

Leopard on the Rock- A dictator who is the target of an assassination plot lands in Hawaii

Which Way Did They Go?- William Windom vs. Jack Lord in a cat-and-mouse game. 'Nuff said.

Blind Tiger- McGarrett is blinded by a deranged assailant; Danny takes over

Run Johnny Run- Christopher Walken vs. Jack Lord ('nuff said again)

Cry Lie- Martin Sheen is a slimy lawyer who frames Chin Ho

Most Likely to Murder- Policeman Tom Skerritt's wife is murdered

3 Dead Cows at Makapuu- While it definitely could have been shortened to 1 part, this 2-parter concerns a scientist (Ed Flanders) who has developed a deadly bacterial weapon that he is holding the state for ransom with.

Again, Season 2 (along with season 3) are my favorites. I can only think of a few episodes that disappointed (Bored She Hung Herself, To Hell with Babe Ruth). Great guest stars and plenty of action this season!

It looks like Season Two will be out by the end of July. If they hold to the "Average" Release Schedule for Seasons, I wouldn't be surprised if Season Three will be featured in a "Black Friday" Sale this November!

Just curious -- does anyone know if these shows were shot on 35mm? I suspect the hand-held shots in the John Larch episode mentioned earlier (where he drills McGarrett on the beach) were shot with a 16mm camera.

Is this the same Mike of the Hawaii Five-0 Home page?

Weren't most televsion shows shot on 35mm film at the time?

I believe the shows were shot on standard 35mm film. The POV shots where Larch shoots people in the episode are still 35mm, but they are using a hand-held camera (cameraman appears to be holding the camera pointing it at the ground while running). Typically the cameras are on dollys and cranes, on tracks.

they draw from never anticipated that pre-orders would fly it off the
shelf the way it did ... even Best Buy sold out in less than a week.
That's really impressive.

I gave up and bought it on ebay when EVERY etailer I went to was sold out of it. Having never seen it before, I Netflixed it first to make sure I would like it before buying. Then when I loved it and decided to buy, it was no where to be found!

I got it for $28 which included first class shipping so I really can't complain. That's cheaper than anywhere else. I was just floored that it sold out at that many different places in such a short period of time.

I wonder if Mission Impossible Season 1 would have had similar results had it gotten the same exposure as Hawaii Five-O. It was like going on a treasure hunt to find it in the B&M stores this past December.

For those of you who were around when these first aired , were they comparable in popularity when they originally ran?

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I barely remember them from their original run on CBS, but I watched them in reruns on WOR in the mid-to-late 80's (this was a New York superstation). They were chopped-up and grainy, faded prints, but it was still fun discovering them. WOR ran Five-0 for many years. When I moved to Orlando in 1991, the Fox affiliate WOFL ran them off and on (uncut) until 2002 or 2003; this is the source from which I was able to make most of my recordings from. Family Channel and other cable outlets ran the chopped, remastered prints starting in 1997. There are still 20 or more stations that run them today around the country. Hawaii Five-0 is an evergreen show, particularly popular in the late evening and afternoon time slots.

The fact that "Hawaii Five-0" ran for 12 seasons speaks volumes of its popularity; until "Law & Order" came around, it was television's longest running crime series.

"Mission: Impossible" took advantage of the spy craze of the 1960s and, while not enjoying the longevity of "Hawaii Five-0," was "must see TV" every Saturday night when it was originally broadcast.

Re: First Season - Back in Stock?

Does the quality hold for the entire 12 seasons or does it diminish in the later seasons as if often the case with long running series?

The only thing I remember about this from childhood is the music and opening scenes with the hula dancer and the big wave. I've had an absolute blast discovering this on DVD, and anxiously look forward to collecting subsequent seasons assuming they're as entertaining as this one is.

I enjoyed S1 of Mission Impossible as well, but I'd have to rate the entertainment value of Five-O as slightly higher if I had to choose. I'm told that MI got even better in S2.

Re: First Season - Back in Stock?

The last couple of years the quality of the shows "went south" significantly. CBS also did it's best to "Discourage" Viewers by Pre-Empting Hawaii Five-O for 2 or three weeks at a time for "Special" Programming. Time and again one would turn to the Thursday night Slot (I Believe it was 9:00 PM) and hear "Hawaii Five-O will not be seen tonight!" One evening I was almost Incensed when I overheard on one evening, when Hawaii Five-O and the show preceding it were both pre-empted, "The First Show" (I cannot remember which show it was, The Waltons?) will return next week, Hawaii Five-O will return in Three Weeks!" All I could say was "Why is CBS "Ganging Up" on Hawaii Five-O for its Specials?" Naturally Viewership fell off, and consequently the show was canned.
