Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I ordered the 2nd season last Thursday from Deep Discount, and I should have it in the mail in time for next weekend. It will be great to see these episodes again.

Seriously, what kid today has even heard of Hawaii Five-O? Any kid who is smart enough to have heard of a forty-year-old crime drama is smart enough to distinguish fiction from reality.

I have heard of it, and have bought it and intend to buy the remaining seasons as soon as they are out. I am a teen and I think others would like it if they saw a few episodes but because its "old" they'll turn their noses up at it

As someone who is as old as Hawaii Five-O, I'd like to say that although I enjoy modern series too ("24" and HBO's "Six Feet Under", for example), it would be great if there were a new batch of series in this century to bring back both the filmmaking style and music that worked so great back in Five-O's time. Because if that ever happened, and the trend caught on...the younger generation could no longer disregard some of the truly old shows of being dated!

Then again, if you keep watching Hawaii Five-O, you'll notice that it too changes with the times. Several of those changes are for the better though. The mid to late 1970s episodes have a different look and feel compared to the first 4 seasons. But in one way they are worse: miniskirts went out of style.

The hairstyles and fashion of the first 4 years are much more contemporary than those of the later seasons, which look more dated ironically.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I got this at Wal-Mart for $33.24 last week. Interestingly enough, it was an out-of-the-way Wal-Mart near Detroit that had cut the price deeper than any store around here. I'm guessing that the warnings on the back were keeping people away from the set, so the store decided to cut the price down so they could move stock on a potentially horrific set. One missing episode and possible syndie cuts probably scared them.

Then again, this Wal-Mart put out the new Dragon Dynasty 'Crime Story' release out a week early as well, so who knows.

Now that this has been out for awhile....do any of the individual episode timings look truncated? Has it been established conclusively that the warning on the box refers only to previews/credits and not to the body of any episodes?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Any day now I'll have this set arriving in the mail, and I want to know what the deal is about their using the first season credits instead of the 2nd season at the beginning? The music arrangement for the second season is much better. I hope that too wasn't replaced with the first year's.

What's most important is that the guys are in the canoe in the end credits, and not the first year's flashing police siren.

Also: Was the wave preceding the opening teaser brought back? That was omitted from the first season episodes.

I guess so they could be lazy and remaster only one set of opening credits instead of two, since there are no cast changes. Maybe they didn't notice the changes in the visuals (ex: James MacArthur's credit) and figured remastering those wasn't needed?

I can't imagine they'd have changed the closing credits, because they'd have to remake them (or re-key the individual credits, which could change from week-to-week) for every episode if they were going to change them.

One review I saw said the opening wave is included.

I have a question about the season 1-2 releases: are the waves/musical sting/title cards that accompanied the "going to commercial" ad breaks still present, or sloppily edited out (or were they even a part of the early episodes)?

You'll be happy to know that the pre-show wave is intact on these episodes, closing credits are intact, and Season 2 music arrangement is used in the opening credits. The only change is that they used the Season 1 visuals in the opening credits, noting 'James MacArthur as Danny' instead of 'as Dan Williams' (they probably only remastered the 1 version to use for the first 4 seasons).

Plus, most of the episodes have the next week 'be there, aloha' previews available to select at the beginning of the shows.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

OK, so "Danny Williams" is listed instead of just "Danny" in the openings. That's fine. But is the theme music of these 2nd season shows as it should be in those opening credits, or is it still the 1st season music?

A change like this is nothing though. I remember a VHS release I bought of the GUNSMOKE episode "The Jailer" -- the famous Bette Davis episode from 1966, one of the first color shows from the excellent 12th season. For some bizarre reason the 12th season opening theme was replaced with the 14th season opening! Buck Taylor wasn't on the show until 1967!! At least the end theme was the 1966 one. I just don't get that at all. If CBS Video were "lazy" they would have left it the way it was....not change it.

Back to Five-O, I'm glad that they've reinstated the pre-credits wave for Season 2. Not only is the 4th season (1971-72) opening theme music superior to the previous seasons, but its wave also has a similarly different orchestration as well. But after Zulu left the show, the fifth season on has no wave or even a teaser before the theme anyway. Seasons 9 to 12 have brief scenes from the show itself.
