Both of the longer films made quite an impression on me when I first saw them. This edition of Helter Skelter has approximately 184 min. (a version I've never seen) as opposed to the 119 min. version that I have seen previously, so that will be a real treat. And from what I have read regarding this collection of The Three Stooges, it is pretty much unparalleled.
Both those films did the same for me.

I'd never seen anything like Helter Skelter and it scared me to death. When I watch something over the top, like the original TCM or Last House on the Left, I'm reminded about how I felt. Kind of like, "people actually did this to other people?" Also, it takes advantage of the old "boogyman is real" fear we have as children.

Jim Jones was actually enlightening. Some of our friends attended his sermons when he'd come to town in the 70s where I used to live near Atlanta GA. (very very strange friends, no kidding, they had one of their kids go bad and he strangled a female hitchhiker) Also, (and this is weird) a TV cameraman who accompanied that senator to Guyana, and was killed along with him, used to work at the very radio station I work at now. The cameraman's brother was manager here in the early 90s, and laid me off. That film involves one of my worst fears, being forced to do something I don't want, including being held captive. I couldn't imagine being made to drink that stuff at gunpoint. I'd definitely do what I had to to get out even if I got shot.

The Stooges definitely balance well with these creepy films.

Radioman,

I saw the original TCM back in the early 1970s (I think it was 1974). I saw it at the Drive-In. It was very chilling to say the least.

Wow, the same station, eh? That is weird. I've studied cults and cult evangelism for years, so this is one of those 'must have' films for me. So is Helter Skelter. I have tons of books on the subject, but not as many films. It's a collection (films on cults) I'm gradually starting to develop a bit more these days. I also love cult films, but that's not the same thing.

Yeah, and they have a cult following--LOL.

Wild Wild West Season 4.

With all the fuss I often read about shows being abandoned before they are complete I should congratulate Paramount for releasing all 4 seasons in a little over a year and a half.

Yeah, it's spooky. His picture is on the wall. He worked for NBC in the 70s. In the early 90s I did the morning show for exactly the same radio station he worked at previously, but now I work down the hall at a station owned by the same company. His family still lives here and they always add birthdays to our birthday club. Tom Brokaw came to our little town for his funeral.

I have a strong fascination for that material as well, especially when it's inspired by religion. Mainly, I want to avoid getting caught in that kind of craziness. 900 people lost their lives because of that insane man. I'm going to have to pick up both those darn films soon. It's been ages for each. I understand they are making a new Manson film about the Manson Women. That could be interesting.

Now, the 3 Stooges Cult, that's one I'd gladly join!

I thought I'd add that THIS DOCUMENTARY on Jones is supposed to be excellent. I remember seeing part of it and finding it amazing. I was reading that there is a lot of film that NBC has yet to release. That info might be outdated, but the material is supposed to include that last material the NBC newcrew filmed.

Re: Whats the last TV DVD you bought

So my friend bought me the 10th anniversary collection DVDs of Xena for my birthday and I watched all of it really fast...When I was done, I found myself wanting more. I had forgotten how much I loved this show and those episodes (16 of them) were just a tease! So I found myself ebaying and buying the complete series. Can't wait to re-live the show!

Shows I Want to See on DVD:
- Who's the Boss? Seasons 2-8
- Law & Order: SVU Seasons 6 (April 1, 08), 7 & 8...
- The Nanny Seasons 3-6
- Taxi Seasons 4-5

Radioman,

Thanks for that link. I hadn't heard of this documentary. At 1.5 hours, it looks quite good, and the reviews of it are also positive. I found this line (from one of the reviews) to be quite chilling:

"There is ample footage of Jones himself, along with the recollections of Peoples Temple members (including those very few who survived Jonestown) and others. Deleted scenes and an interview with Nelson highlight the bonus material."

I'm really intrigued to hear the thoughts of those who were able to survive the ordeal. This is one DVD I will probably pick up now, especially given what I've read about it this morning. I kind of wish I had ordered it along with the film.

There's also a book HERE by one of the survivors as well. That would make a great companion to these films. It's really amazing since most of the people who were victims of this guy weren't religious nuts, but people who were just searching for a place to belong or some meaning in their lives. Jones took full advantage of that. What a screwball!

The stuff about the kool-aid is always eery. I believe that have Jones himself in that doc telling them to drink the stuff, in rehearsal most likely. Although I've heard before it wasn't kool-aid brand but Flavor Aid mix. That's on wiki.

I placed an order earlier for Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Complete Seventh Season which completes (finally after six years) my second all-time favorite series.

Disney/Buena Vista/Miramax: Please put Beautiful Girls on Blu-ray with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer in 1080p, and an anamorphic re-release with bonus features and the original theatrical trailer day-and-date on DVD. Thanks!
