Fox: Planet Of The Apes Se

To anybody listening at FOX... I start off the new year with a request for my favorite title in its proper perspective. An presentation of this title with film specific SE content is long overdue... as it has never been released in that manner in any format...LD or DVD. Anamorphic is a no-brainer.... but the SE content is long overdue. Charlton Heston commentary anyone?

Apperantly you missed the news about this title, it's going to be a 5-Star (2-disc) release in 2003. Expect the usual 5-Star treatment and suppliments, though I don't see what they could add in SE content that would be anywhere as indepth as the "Behind the Planet of the Apes" 2-disc set that Image released a few months ago.

They are also going to also re-issue the sequels in anamorphic, good news for all you widescreen TV owners out there. No news on if they are going to be made Special editions, like they did the Die Hard Sequels. As far as commentary, expect probably some of the make-up effects artists, and some of the surviving cast. As for a Charlton Heston commentary, I sincerly doubt that.

Thanks for the info Mike... I keep up with all DVD release news closely...and that one came out of left field to me. I had heard rumors of a 5-star...but they were entirely that...rumors. Do you mind if I ask if you recall your source for this info? I have the 2 disc APES you mention... and while good, was more concerned with the length of the series. That original ..deserves SE content unto itself. Why so sure about the Chuck commentary? He did a half-baked one for BEN HUR.....

ALIEN and POTA were both mentioned by Fox at the last Studio Day. I tried looking for the info from then, but came up short. So, you'll have to settle for a paraphrased quote, since I can't find the exact one.

At the time they mentioned Strange Days as the third possibilty for 2003. But after seeing the specs for the R2 Predator, I expect it to take SD's place. After all, Predator is a much better film, IMHO.

from the Fox chat transcript of 7/31/2001:
Quote:
{BillHuelbig} Thanks for spending your valuable time with us tonight, Mr. Staddon.
My question concerns the original PLANET OF THE APES ... can we expect a new anamorphic edition, perhaps under the 5-star banner? Perhaps it could coincide with the home video release of the Tim Burton remake...

{PeterStaddon} We are not planning on revisiting Planet of the Apes (original) any time soon. It would make a good 5 star title - it certainly meets all the criteria but probably not until 2003 at the very earliest. We are releasing the Planet of the Apes TV series in the not too distant future for all the apes fans out there.

Again...thanks for the great info guys. It still sounds a bit "iffy" though. Well... FOX or Peter.. consider this one very big vote for my baby!

From what I hear POTA is Chuck's favorite movie, and since he did one for Ben-Hur, I'm POSITIVE he'd be willing to do one for POTA

Let's hope the 5-Star edition gets rid of the awful
cover art which gives away the classic ending. On
the present DVD, the ending is ruined on the front
cover, the disc itself, and oh yes.. let's not forget
the main menu! (I played my POTA DVD for a friend
who had never watched the film before, and needless
to say, it was a real *pain*.)

So remember Fox, some people do buy classic DVDs on
recommendations alone, so don't go out of your way to
ruin the film for them.
