RAH talks Abel Gance's La Roue out on May 6th

Amazon.com: La Roue: Séverin-Mars,Ivy Close,Gabriel de Gravone,Pierre Magnier,Georges Térof,Abel Gance: Movies & TV

Quote:
This new restoration with a running time of nearly four and a half hours, accompanied by Robert Israel s symphonic score, is the fullest presentation of La Roue to reach the public since 1923. It at last allows audiences today to experience the amazing, poetic vision that Abel Gance brought to the world. The DVD also includes a short film that provides a vivid documentary record of the great work in production, along with a booklet containing an outstanding essay by William M. Drew on the history and impact of La Roue, and comments by Robert Israel on the score.

There is also more from RAH here

I'm pleased that you've made note of this.

La Roue is one of the films that established the language of cinema. After over eight decades, it still has the power to enchant and enthrall an audience.

I recorded TCM's airing on my DVR, but it's so eaten up with compression artifacts, I'm going to wait for the DVD.

By the way, is Kevin Brownlow's "The Charm of Dynamite" an extra on the J'accuse DVD?

The Flicker Alley website hasn't any details on the release yet, other than a score by Robert Israel.

However, for those interested, Flicker Alley has both La Roue and J'Accuse up with special pre-release prices and free shipping:

La Roue - $31.95
J'Accuse - $29.95

But hurry, that price for La Roue can't last for much longer.

My review of La Roue is up at digitallyobsessed.com.
dOc DVD Review: La Roue (1923)

Flicker Alley/Film Preservation Associates have really outdone themselves. Most of the film is in gorgeous condition beyond random speckling, with excellent greyscale and detail, and there's none of that pesky combing or ghosting that we've been plagued with for so long on Euro-sourced silents. Flicker Alley finally seems to have defeated that beast, and it's about time. Highly recommended to students of film and fans of silents.

Thanks for the review Mark

My copy should be on its way by now.

Would I be correct in saying that if both La Rouse and J'Accuse sell really well in the next few months, would Napoleon be far away ?

Cheers

Oscar
