Criterion set to release Anthony Mann's THE FURIES (1950)
The Criterion Collection email newsletter for December gives a strong hint that they will be releasing Anthony Mann's strange Western / Film Noir / Tragedy hybrid film - The Furies (1950).
So with El Cid from The Weinstein Company in January, that's another two Anthony Mann films down.

From the newsletter:

A year of Criterion newsletters also means a year of wacky animals clueing readers in to upcoming releases. The animals don’t always come from the films they’re hinting about, but they do relate to movies somewhere in the Criterion catalog.
|
There's a competition in the catalogue this week to match a group of animals with the films they reference, if you can match them up properly you can win a Criterion t-shirt.

Great news. Maybe Criterion could also release the noirs "The File on Thelma Jordon", "No Man of her own" and the romance "September Affair". This would be perfect.

Maybe the Eclipse line should have a sub-series - "Paramount Noir".
There isn't much chance that Paramount itself would release their own Noir line like Fox, Warner, and to a lesser extent Universal.

Criterion's relationship with Paramount is our only hope that their back catalogue gets released. I suspect it's a bit vulgar for Criterion's refined taste but I'd do cartwheels if Criterion got their hands on DeMille's Samson And Delilah.

I'll snap up that DVD of The Furies. The Cinemax channels aired it a couple of years ago. Stanwyck and Judith Anderson certainly had a "cutting" exchange in one scene (final score: Missy 1, Mrs. Danvers 0).
Those who don't have a copy of Thelma Jordon can record one off TCM at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 18.

YES!!! This film has been on my 'most wanted' list for ages! You'll never look at a pair of scissors the same way again after seeing this flick!

The notorious MY SON JOHN cries out for a Criterion release. The subtext alone mandates a second disc.

I'm not familiar with this film, but Anthony Mann and Barabara Stanwyck automatically make this a must-own!

Sadly, wouldn't One Eyed Jacks need an extensive restoration before a Criterion release would be worthwhile? Maybe they could do the best they can from the best pre-existing I.P., then release it under their Eclipse brand. It would at least be as good as the best public domain versions, but it would be a legitimately licensed release, which would make me willing to buy it.
