I agree that Comcast would never give anything away for free. The technology needs to be leaps and bounds better before I would rely on cable to deliver my movies. Overly compressed full frame movies in Pro Logic II are not my idea of the ideal. I'll stick with DVD for my movie fix and watch cable to get my fill of American Idol, Survivor, UFC Fight Night and The Soup.

Now, if Netflix creates a set top box that delivers HD films for the same fee as rentals, I'm in.

No problem. I considered that possibility after I hit the submit button. Sorrry for jumping to a conclusion. I'm on the fence with Netflix. On the one hand, I would love to be able to watch catalog titles without having to necesarily buy them. On the other, I just don't know if I would get real value from them, since even I have to limit my movie watching time. If I don't then my wife does it for me.

Re: Project Infinity To Replace DVD's?

Getting back to the original poster's question, yes I think a download service like the one proposed could put a dent into disk based media. Granted, a random poll around here would never suggest such a thing, but out there in the real world folks are trying to figure out how to get video onto their tiny Ipods. It also appears that a lot of people have learned their lesson about buying disks from the heady DVD days. I've lost count of the number of average joe's who are dumping disks on the second-hand market because they realize that they never really watch them that often.

I'm starting to wonder if we haven't already hit the zenith of shelf-based home media a couple of years ago. Somewhere just before the peak of DVD while music CD's were still riding high. It's been a slow but steady decline ever since.

If it were truly free, or even nominally priced, [and actually worked reliably] then I would tend to agree. But if it's priced at or near the level of physical media, I just don't see it catching on. We haven't even discussed the almost certain DRM restrictions that would accompany such an offering.

We have the 4 at a time unlimited option -- 1 for the kids, 1 for me and 2 for my wife and I. It works out pretty well. Even watching only on weekends, I can see at least 10 per month. Usually its closer to 20 per month because I often watch after flicks work when I exercise. Makes the time fly. I have read that Netflix is testing a set top box downloader late this year. I'd love to be a test subject.

If Comcast could offer affordable quality, I also think it would hurt DVD sales. It could also result in good competition and reduced DVD prices. Hell, progressive scan upconverting players go for $50 or less now. Discs could follow.

Re: Project Infinity To Replace DVD's?

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. I got an email from Netflix advertising their new Set Top Box by Roku. You can select from 12,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix that are instantly viewable. The box is a one-time cost of $100. Needs an internet connection and a Netflix subscription. Check out the link.

The Netflix Player by Roku | Watch Over 12,000 Netflix Titles Instantly on your TV

Personally, I only have 2 digital audio outputs on my Onkyo system (1 for cable and 1 for DVDs). If I chose to do it, I'd have to pull the connector out and plug it in the box every time I watched a movie in order to get the best AQ. My set has enough component connectors in order to get the best PQ.

What do you guys think?

Any additional word on Project Infinity?
