Re: Storraro Crops Last Emperor???

Wasn't the Apocalypse Now crop also director approved?

Anyway, it's apparently Storraro's view that the 2.0:1 crop is a good compromise between available resolution and OAR. Well, at least that's what was said when it was done for Apocalypse Now. Thing is I thought that was based on SD resolution, not HD. But it sounds like the crop is done on the HD master itself, so unless there's a new (re)master for an eventual HDM release, we'll probably be stuck w/ the crop for that too.

Yes. As were the aspect ratio changes to other films for home video (The Recruit, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Good German, The World's Fastest Indian, to name a few.).

"This is already being discussed in this thread: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection) "

That talks about length,not about
2.00:1 (the statement from the producer"

"Maybe I should just buy the R2 16x9 PAL DVD and pass on the new Criterion DVD"
I would wait till we find out for sure,if the picture is cropped,at least there
is a fine 2.34:1 version out there.

Is this title coming out in HD, then? If so, I'd be the first to but the film.

Not that I am aware of, which makes me wonder why this thread was started in this forum?

Re: Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

If this one is indeed 2.0:1 crop, then I may have to pass on it and maybe opt for the existing R2 PAL version. And to think one would have to shell out $40+ for that too. I hadn't realized before that there was a much better R2 version than the awful R1 version.

Looks like the UK R2 SE works out at $22-$23 including shipping from HMV?
