Burbank, Calif., December 3, 2007 – Bonnie and Clyde -- starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway and directed by Arthur Penn, a film considered to be one of the most influential in the history of American cinema -- will be released on March 25 by Warner Home Video in two beautiful new DVD editions and on Hi-Def.
The editions offered will be a Two-Disc Special Edition and, available for a limited time only, the Ultimate Collector’s Edition. Both have been completely remastered from the original elements, and both boast more than two hours of new bonus content, highlighted by “Revolution! The Making of Bonnie and Clyde,” an all new in-depth commemorative documentary. Also included is the History Channel’s® “Love & Death: The Story of Bonnie and Clyde” (a look at the lives of the real Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow) as well as Warren Beatty wardrobe tests and additional scenes, both newly discovered. The Bonnie and Clyde Ultimate Collector’s Edition will also contain collectible memorabilia, with a 36-page hardcover book of rare, behind-the-scenes photos, a 24-page reproduction of the original 1967 press book and special mail-in poster offer.
Bonnie and Clyde Ultimate Collector’s Edition will sell for $39.92 SRP; Bonnie and Clyde Two-Disc Special Edition will be available for $20.97 SRP. Simultaneous HD DVD and Blu-Ray versions of Bonnie and Clyde will also be released for $34.99 SRP each.
The DVD release will be included in Warner Home Video’s 85th Anniversary Celebration. The details of this initiative will be announced in January and will introduce a number of branded collections throughout 2008 -- new-to-DVD, High Definition debuts and Ultimate Collector’s Editions. About Bonnie and Clyde
Released after the Hollywood Production Code ended, Bonnie and Clyde became one of the ‘60s most talked about and controversial films -- combining romance and comedy with a level of graphic violence previously unseen anywhere to date. The finale’s balletic bloodbath, highly criticized for its shocking depiction, lived on to become much imitated in films that followed. And while obviously living the life of outlaws on the lam, the criminal couple was still portrayed as glamorous, with shiny roadsters and vintage fashions that fueled a popular style trend. Who can forget Theadora Van Runkle’s Oscar®-nominated fashion designs featuring Faye Dunaway’s beret and Warren Beatty’s fedora?
Bonnie and Clyde, co-starring Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons and Gene Wilder in his movie debut -- was written by first-timers David Newman and Robert Benton (previously editors at Esquire magazine). The film tells the story of ex-con Clyde Barrow (Beatty), who first meets his accomplice/sweetheart (Dunaway) when she interrupts him trying to steal her mother’s car. The two work their way across the southwest on a whirlwind crime spree, becoming known as the Barrow gang, which includes their driver, C.W. (Pollard), Clyde’s brother Burt (Hackman) and Burt’s wife (Estelle Parsons).
The film premiered at the Montréal Film Festival in 1967, to a wildly enthusiastic audience of industry insiders and cinephiles. Despite this initial success, the film was not initially a box-office blockbuster, and received a mixed reception from movie reviewers. Old-guard stalwarts weren’t ready to grasp the film’s message, and decried the violence. At the other end of the spectrum were another group of film critics who strongly supported it, most notably The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael. It was Kael who went out on a limb to champion the film as not only a masterpiece, but one which would redefine American Cinema.
But with a post-release brilliant marketing campaign, spearheaded by Beatty (who also developed and produced the film), Bonnie and Clyde eventually went on to garner 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director (it won two - for Estelle Parsons’ supporting actor and cinematographer Burnett Guffey) and proceeded to make back 20 times its estimated $2.5 million cost in its U.S. theatrical release alone.
At its core, Bonnie and Clyde is a 1930’s gangster film -- albeit a revisionist one that in 1967 redefined and romanticized the crime genre for a new generation. It seems only appropriate that the studio to release it would be Warner Bros., so notable for its 1930s gangster films.
Bonnie and Clyde also marked the emergence of Warren Beatty, only 30 years of age when the film was released, as a major American filmmaker. Beatty would go on to become an Academy Award®-winning writer, director and producer with 14 Oscar® nominations and one win as Best Director (for “Reds”). He became the only person, besides Orson Welles, ever to be nominated for four Oscars in the same year, and he accomplished the feat twice - for Heaven Can Wait and for Reds. In 2000, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with their Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, awarded to creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production. This June, the American Film Institute will be presenting him with their highly coveted Life Achievement Award.
