Sony To Offer Catalog Ttitles Through Manufactured-On-Demand Service

Quote:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) Jan. 24 became the first major studio to offer select catalog titles for production and distribution through Hewlett-Packard's (HP) manufactured-on-demand (MOD) DVD service.

Financial terms of the license deal and names of the pertinent catalog titles, which include from 75 to 200 movies, were not disclosed.

HP separately has 40 DVD license deals for about 5,000 titles with Arts Alliance America, First Look Studios, Gaiam Americas Inc., Nelvana Enterprises, Venevision International Films LLC, Vanguard Cinema, TLA Releasing and Wolfe Video LLC.

HP Video Merchant Services allows retailers to produce and sell on-demand DVDs and limited edition discs at a fraction of the cost to traditionally produce a DVD.

The service is seen as a means of affording smaller content holders packaged media distribution direct to the consumer or retail.

David Bishop, president of SPHE, said the agreement affords the studio a means of delivering a broader range of niche and library titles more economically to consumers.

'We know there is strong consumer demand for these titles, and by working with HP, we may now monetize our deep product library … without a significant investment in inventory,' Bishop said.

Does anybody think this might be a way we could eventually see the Boetticher/Scott films on DVD?

I think this could possibly open up the door to a lot of that B filler stuff that constantly pops up on TCM. I'll certainly be checking out the initial offerings to get a sense of their direction.

Imagine if Warners did this, with their HUGE "B" titles from the classic Turner library!

When everything is in place, I'll be the one compiling the Boston Blackie movies, the Fox & Crow cartoons, and the non-Three Stooges/Buster Keaton Columbia shorts. Let's hope this idea is a rousing success.

THE GREAT DVD WISH LIST
TELEVISION: Dave Allen At Large, Department S (R1), The F.B.I., Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin (R1), The Goodies (R1), It Takes a Thief, M Squad ('08/09!), Name Of the Game, Waterfront

MOVIES: At Sword's Point, Belles of St. Trinian's (R1), Cavalcade, Dangerous Moonlight, W.C. Fields Vol. 3 (with Million Dollar Legs), Harry's War, Time Out For Rhythm, Who's Minding the Mint?, The Wrong Box, the Boston Blackie movies, the Bowery Boys movies, the Fox & Crow cartoons, the Mexican Spitfire movies, the Wheeler & Wolsey movies, the non-Our Gang Hal Roach shorts, the non-Three Stooges/Buster Keaton Columbia shorts

All studios should do this. Not every title is worth putting on DVD in a regular sense, but "on demand" printing is an excellent idea.

Tell The Weinstein Company to release Richard Williams' animated masterpiece The Thief and the Cobbler on DVD in Panavision widescreen and uncut! See and hear what you're missing from their Bitsy Award winner of Worst Standard Edition DVD of 2006 on YouTube!

Also, it will force them to strike new, better prints!

Not necessarily. Most likely, they would use whatever transfers that already exists. Which isn't a bad thing as long as these on-demand DVDs aren't overwhelmingly expensive.

Some of the smaller studios (like Grapevine and ReelClassicDVDs.com) have to use DVD-Rs, but they're always high quality. Its not like they write the movie title on the disc with a sharpie. I've been able to make DVD-Rs of some of my own work that work perfectly in most players and have just as much quality from a studio release (in terms of usability and competent graphic design).

I have several films from DVD-R since they're from very small outfits, but it's better than not having them at all because the distributor can't afford to press a few thousand discs.

Give me So This is Africa, and all the Columbia Short Subjects such as Charley Chase, Vernon & Quillan, Andy Clyde, Schillings & Lane, Vera Vague, Scrappy, Krazy Kat, this would be great for something finding an audience and maybe they could judge people's actions and interests so as to make something a bit better down the line.
