I think that's so; it looks like Paramount has discontinued a number of back catalogue classics - Lady in a Cage, The Carpetbaggers and The Lonely Man (among others) are also MIA.

Good old Paramount. It's not enough that they almost abandon their classic releases is it? Now they're making unavailable the classics they have previously released...

What a bunch of maroons...

On a positive note, this did inspire me to shoot over to Amazon and promptly place an order for every single back cat. title that's been on the list for the past few years. I finally ordered Nevada Smith, Three Violent People, The Carpetbaggers, The Day Of The Locust, Nashville, The Desperate Hours and Fear Strikes Out (blind buy). I'm pretty sure I'll own the complete back library of Paramount classics now avail. on DVD. Well... all except for Barefoot In The Park which I'd like to purchase but the current DVD is pretty awful from what I recall.

Does Paramount even release theatrical films on DVD anymore?

I can't think of the last p.r. I'd seen from the company that wasn't simply a reissue.

You got some Oscar winning films on that list. I own just about all of them except 2-3 of them. I recommend the following:
  • Hud (IMO, Paul Newman's best acting performance with Oscar winning performances from O'Neal and Douglas)
  • Come Back, Little Sheba (Great acting performances from Lancaster and Oscar winning performance Shirley Booth)
  • The Counterfeit Traitor (A very good spy movie taking place in WWII)
  • The Country Girl (Oscar Winning performance from Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby showing some acting chops along with William Holden)
  • The Last Tycoon (A Kazan film pattern after the great Irving Thalberg with De Niro playing that character)

G.W. McLintock: Camille, you're on your own.

A see a few that I haven't added to my collection that might be worth checking out.

Of some of the ones I do own, I definitely second Robert's recommendation of Hud. This is a wonderful film with terrific performances from the entire cast. (It features my second favorite Newman performance). Also of special note is the Academy Award winning cinematography of James Wong Howe.

From earlier in the thread, I think that Nevada Smith is a great catalog addition to your collection, Marco; with a solid Steve McQueen performance in a great Western tale of revenge.

- Walter.

Re: Branded (1950) -- Discontinued??

Thanks for the recommendations Robert and Walter!

Are these flicks any good, the titles are all new to me?

A New Kind Of Love
A Breath Of Scandal
It Started In Naples
Heller In Pink Tights
All In A Night's Work
Half A Sixpence

There's a few fine directors in the list like Cukor and Curtiz but I sort of get the feeling that these are films they'd just as well have forgotten. From the descriptions, a lot of them seem like the sort of late Sixties drivel that would come from a typical Doris Day picture, past-their-prime directors struggling to keep work with commercial studio adaptations of silly musicals and saccharine comedies based on stage plays. Am I wrong, are any of the above redeeming? While I'm not one to ever base mu opinions on this, they haven't received the highest support from their lousy ratings on imdb...

I've seen "Heller in Pink Tights" in many of those Wal-Mart $5 bins.

Some of them are fine films, but are more dependent on individual taste. If you're a big Sophia Loren fan then I would buy A Breath of Scandal, Heller in Pink Tights and It stated in Naples. I just don't feel as comfortable recommending those remaining films as I do the others.
